ERCC: Montpellier v Glasgow Warriors Preview

Montpellier will be looking to pile the pressure on teams above them when they face off with the Glasgow Warriors for the second successive week running.

Vern Cotter's Montpellier took a massive step towards securing qualification for the next round of the Champions Cup when they beat the Glasgow Warriors out in Scotland last weekend. They welcome the exact same opponents, although possibly in a different guise to the Altrad Stadium this coming Saturday.

Montpellier Herault
Vern Cotter's men bounce-back in spates as they put the wretched recent run of domestic form behind them with a highly impressive seven-point victory over the Glasgow Warriors outfit last Saturday. The French club came into last weekend's clash with a +6.5 handicap affixed to their names, and they completely blew that out the water running out 22-29 victors.

Last week's result has seen Montpellier draw level with English Champions, Exeter, on the Pool 3 standings. And while they are unlikely to close the gap on Pool 3 pacesetters Leinster - who sit some six points above Montpellier - they may well be able to claim second spot and one of the best-placed pool phase runners-up positions, which would see them advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Cotter's chance of guiding his side to the next phase of the 'comp would be greatly enhanced if his side can claim another bonus point victory this weekend. They have every chance of doing so as not only will they be on their home patch but they will also face a weakened Glasgow side with a host of Warriors' first stringers set to be rested.

Glasgow Warriors
While Glasgow still have a mathematical chance of advancing to the next round, coach Dave Rennie will have known the jig was up when the final whistle blew at the Scoutstoun last Saturday. The recently installed Glasgow coach has seen his side put in three poor showings in the Champions Cup, which is a massive shock considering how dominant they are in the Pro 14. With only one pool point to their name, the Warriors have next to nothing to play for this weekend.

With nothing on the line, Rennie is likely to rest a host of his first-stringers, especially with the Warriors having to contest a few Pro 14 derbies over the Christmas and New Years period. As such, we're unlikely to see Scottish backs, Finn Russel, Huw Jones, and Stuart Hogg take to the field this Saturday. In their place will be a handful of Glasgow's young guns, who while talented are yet to face the rigours of playing against such a star-studded French Club.

Verdict: Montpellier (-12.5) 9/10 *Please note that this is a forecast handicap
Montpellier will be looking to claim a bonus point win here and I can see them doing just that against what will be a rather inexperienced Warriors outfit. If you get a minus line under the 15 point mark, I suggest jumping on it with confidence.
