French Top 14: Brive v Toulon Preview

Toulon will be looking to move their way up the Top 14 ladder when they take on Brive on Saturday the 6th of January.

Saturday throws up a rather fascinating Top 14 clash with fifth-placed Toulon taking on 11th-place Brive. The visitors endured an extremely sub-par 2017 and will hope 2018 is somewhat of a new dawn. The hosts also found things tough at the back end of last year and will be looking to pull away from the relegation mire as soon as possible.
CA Brive v RC Toulonnais | Saturday 6 January | Stade Amedee-Domenech | 17:45

To Win (80 Mins)
Brive 13/10 | Draw 18/1 | Toulon 13/20

CA Brive
With the relegation trap door circling, Brive really need to hit the ground running in 2018. They currently occupy third-to-last position on the Top 14 standings and are only eight points clear of last-placed Oyonnax.

There is a spot of good news for Brive fans as their side managed close out 2017 on a massive high as they beat Montpellier 29-20 at home. This was Brive's fourth successive victory on their own patch, with their last defeat on home soil coming against Toulouse at the start of November.

RC Toulounnais
This game could prove quite the dilemma for Toulon coach Fabien GalthiƩ, who is in the awkward position of having to keep his players fresh for Toulon's Champions Cup commitments as well as try and get his side moving in the right direction on the Top 14 log.

Galthie's charges have been in decent form over the past few months, which has seen the Paris side climb the Top 14 ladder at a rapid rate of knots. They now sit only five points off second-placed Montpellier and only a further two points behind league leaders, La Rochelle. Things could have been even rosier for the big spending Parisians had they not suffered a narrow 18-13 defeat to Toulouse last weekend.

Verdict: Brive 13/10
I'm on the hosts here. Toulon have hardly set the world alight on the road this term and Brive have been a lot more solid on their home patch than on their travels. Having said that, I would recommend a rather small strike on this as there's already enough value with the odds being over even money to not have to risk a fortune here.
