4 Nedbank Cup Upsets in Recent Years

4 upsets in recent years

Our football analyst revisits five Nedbank Cup results that shocked the whole country in the years gone by.

Some people call it the cup of dreams as it gives lower league teams a chance to rub shoulders with the big boys and hopefully embarrass them. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will know better than underestimating the minnows as they have fallen prey. Here are some astonishing results we have witnessed in the past.

Baroka 2-1 Kaizer Chiefs
Nobody expected Kaizer Chiefs to crash out at the 2011 quarter-finals when they were drawn against Bakgakga, who were still a third-tier side but the Limpopo-based outfit shockingly overturned a 1-0 36th-minute goal to win the match 2-1.

Maluti FET College 4-1 Orlando Pirates
This is one of the most embarrassing victories in the history of the Buccaneers. Roger De Sa fielded a second-string side weakened that shipped four goals against an unknown third-tier side in the 2013 edition of the competition.

FC Cape Town 2-0 Kaizer Chiefs
The Cape Town outfit lured Amakhosi to Botshabelo Stadium in Bloemfontein in 2010 where they employed defensive tactics which left the PSL giants frustrated. A goal in each half sealed a 2-0 victory for the underdogs.

University of Pretoria 4-3 Kaizer Chiefs
In a match which turned into a scouting session, players like Mthokozisi Yende and Phenyo Mongalo gave Kaizer Chiefs all sorts of problems that day and they ended up playing for the Glamour Boys and Orlando Pirates respectively. A few other players gained PSL contracts after giving the Soweto giants a footballing lesson they will never forget.
