Aviva Premiership: Harlequins v Wasps Preview

The London Wasps will be looking to improve their chances of claiming a home semi-final when they take on Harlequins on Sunday the 11th of February.

The Aviva Premiership gets back underway this weekend as the Harlequins, sitting in ninth place, entertain the Wasps at the Stoop. The latter are still very much in a position to challenge for the title and another win certainly won’t do their chances any harm.

To Win (80 Mins)
Harlequins 1/1 | Draw 20/1 | Wasps 17/20

Harlequins Rugby
Director of Rugby John Kingston’s side haven’t exactly lit up the league this season. Far from it. The once mighty Londoners have recorded just six wins from 13 domestic duals, including seven losses, and are in dire need of an internal shake-up.

On the plus side, 18-year-old Marcus Smith, 'Quins’ uber-talented flyhalf, has just become the highest paid teenager in the history of the game after signing a contract until 2022 worth a cool £230 000 (R3.9 million) a year. Indeed, the future of the club is not all doom and gloom and fans certainly do have cause for optimism.

On Sunday the Wasps will push the 'Quins to their limits. As always with their London neighbours, who thrive off of offensive exuberance, they should gain the upper hand if they can nullify the attacking impetus of their playmakers. But, considering the wealth of talent at their disposal, this is still very much a case of the job being easier said than done.

London Wasps
Dai Young’s horde (pun very much intended), unlike their opponents this week, have a lot more than mere pride to play for. Currently sitting in third amongst a tightly-knit group of clubs vying for playoff qualification - just six-points separate them from the second-placed Saracens - the Wasps have every reason to believe that they can eradicate the odds and go the distance this season.

Wasps fell to the same opponents at home by 24-points to 21 in September and so will not take their challenge lightly. That said, they certainly have the pedigree to better the 'Quins comfortably this weekend, and will come away with a winning bonus-point if they stick to their formula.

Verdict: Wasps 17/20
The Wasps should make amends for their loss to the same opponents in September by coming away from the Stoop with a bonus-point win this weekend to advance their playoff cause.
