Pro 14: Glasgow Warriors v Cheetahs Preview

The Free State Cheetahs will be looking to do the almost unthinkable and topple the mighty Glasgow in Scotland when the two sides meet on Friday the 16th of February.

The Free State Cheetahs continue their tour of British Isles this week as they travel from Wales to Scotland. Rory Duncan's men were brutally unlucky to lose to the Cardiff Blues last week and will have taken a lot of confidence from that narrow 25-20 defeat.

Like the Cheetahs, Glasgow also fronted up to stubborn Welsh opposition during the last round, with the Dragons holding the mighty Scottish province to a 15-15 draw.

Glasgow Warriors
The Conference A leading Glasgow Warriors have fared rather well over the past few weeks despite missing a whole host of stars due to Six Nations call-ups. They have claimed seven points from the two fixtures they have played since the start of the Six Nations, with five points coming courtesy of a 20-40 victory over Zebre and the other two stemming from last week's 15-15 draw with the Dragons.

And while neither of the aforementioned sides would strike fear into opponents across the Pro14 - they are both struggling at the bottom realms of their respective conferences - it must be remembered that this is silly season in the Pro14 and upsets are a common-place.

The Warriors will once again be without talismanic pivot Finn Russel and fleet-footed fullback, Stuart Hogg. These two were vital to the Glasgow claiming a 26-29 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last October.

Free State Cheetahs
Rory Duncan's men will be kicking themselves for letting a late chance to steal a famous win over Cardiff slip by. The Free Staters, who had opened the scoring through a powerful Ox Nche run, were always in the game and looked like they may steal it at the death as they went through phase after phase of attack. Alas, the Cheetahs were unable to convert their opportunities and were forced to settle for a losing bonus point as Cardiff held out to claim a 25-20 victory.

Despite the loss, the Cheetahs still find themselves in a handy spot heading into the business end of the season as they sit third on the Conference A standings some 12 points ahead of fourth-placed Cardiff. If they can bag a bonus point or two from this encounter, the Free Staters will be primed to advance to the next round of the tournament, especially considering they still have three games at home to come.

Verdict: Glasgow Warriors 1/5
I was leaning towards a small strike the Cheetahs until I saw the weather forecast, which is diabolical. As such, I'm on the home side to make good use of familiar conditions and bag the points here.
