Man City Through to Champions League Quarter Finals

Round of 16 Preview (2nd Leg)

Manchester City booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 5-2 aggregate win over Basel.

It was a relatively mild start to this encounter before City moved up through the gears through Leroy Sane, who skipped past three defenders before firing in a cross that Basel goalkeeper Thomas Vaclik claimed.

Sane was heavily involved in the game's opening goal minutes later as he rode a couple of challenges, played a couple of one-twos before feeding David Silva on the right of goal. The Spaniard played a first-time ball through the legs of two Basel defenders for Gabriel Jesus to slot home at the back stick.

Serey Die was off target as the away side looked for a response while Silva was unable to hit the target after picking up a good Sane cross.

Ilkay Gundogan was denied by the onrushing Vaclik as he looked to sweep home a super dinked cross from Silva, but the Swiss side were soon level to remind their opponents that the tie was not yet won.

The lively Blas Riveros drove forward with pace and power, with his cross from the left deflecting into the path of Mohamed Elyounoussi, who took a touch before hammering home.

Sane was running Basel ragged down the left flank and he came close to setting up a goal for Gundogan, but his shot was blocked by Leo Lacroix.

Basel enjoyed some possession after the half hour mark, but Dimitri Oberlin could only hit the side-netting from a free-kick, before Claudio was forced into a good low save from Riveros.

It was much the same at the start of the second half as City came close to a second, as the ball skimmed off Vaclik's foot into the path of Jesus, who couldn't keep the ball in play.

Lacroix was unable to connect to a floated delivery from Luca Zuffi before Oleksandr Zinchenko was forced to stop Elyounoussi from breaking into the City box.

Despite being largely in control of the tie, City found themselves trailing to a 71st minute Michael Lang goal from a tight angle, with Elyounoussi the provider after a super run and cross from the right flank.

And Vaclik got down well to deny second-half substitute Brahim Diaz as City ultimately saw out this game with ease.
