Super Rugby 2018: Chiefs v Bulls Preview

The Bulls will be looking to bounce back from their six-point defeat to the Reds when they take on the Chiefs on Friday the 16th of March.

The Bulls will be looking to bag their second win of the season when they take on a hit-and-miss Chiefs side this Friday morning. The hosts come into this one off the back of a bye and have won one of the two games they have played thus far. The Bulls, on the other hand, were in action last week, suffering their second defeat of the campaign.

Chiefs v Bulls
Friday 16th March
FMG Waikato Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
Chiefs 1/12
Draw 35/1
Bulls 13/2

Chiefs (-17.5) 9/10
Bulls (+17.5) 9/10

The Chiefs have endured a somewhat underwhelming start going down 45-23 to the Crusaders in their opener before bouncing back to beat the Blues 21-27 in Round 3. They enjoyed a much-needed bye last week, which will have given them time to work on their issues in midfield as well as allow them to get one or two injured players back.

The Chiefs have dominated their recent head-to-heads with this weekend's visitors, winning three and drawing one of the last four clashes with their opponents from Pretoria. The Chiefs have also won the last two contests between the sides by 14 points or more.

Was that victory over the Hurricanes at Loftus a false dawn? I don't really think so. Yes, the Bulls have gone onto lose their next two games following that famous win, but they still look a much more capable side than the one that endured a wretched 2017 Super Rugby campaign. The improvement will continue for the men from Pretoria but they will need to add some street smarts to their game is this is an area they were found lacking in during last weeks 20-14 defeat to the Reds.

Now, the Bulls may come into this one as rank outsiders but they could have a chance of capturing their second Kiwi scalp of the year if they can get their big midfield to pile the pressure on Chiefs pivot, Tiaan Falcon. The New Zealand Under 20's representative is a fantastic player but he hasn't started many Super Rugby games in the crucial pivot position. If the Bulls can expose the young gun, then they may well nullify this Chiefs backline.

Verdict: Bulls (+17.5) 9/10
I quite fancy the Bulls to stay in what is a rather large handicap. The Chiefs have looked a few rungs below the likes of the Crusaders and Hurricanes, and I think they may well struggle to put this competent Bulls side away.
