Varsity Cup 2018 Round 9 Preview

Two players tackling a player

The round-robin phase of the 2018 Varsity Cup comes to an end on Monday the 26th of March.

All will be decided tonight as the Varsity Cup reaches its final round of phase play. The tournament's round-robin phase is set to end in a massive crescendo with only two semi-final berths available and four teams capable of claiming them.

Shimlas v CUT
Shimla Park

To Win (80 Mins)
Shimlas 1/16
Draw 33/1
CUT 7/1

Shimlas (-22.5) 17/20
CUT (+22.5) 17/20

We get the day's proceedings underway with a clash between the sixth-placed and eighth-placed CUT. The visitors have nothing to play for here while the hosts are in without an outside chance of securing the last semi-final berth, which would require them winning this one with a bonus point and other results going their way.

Verdict: Shimlas (-22.5) 17/20
Shimlas desperately need the bonus point here and CUT are just the side you want to be taking on when your in that scenario. I expect a big win for the home side here.

Tuks v Madibaz
Tuks Rugby Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
Tuks 1/12
Draw 33/1
Madibaz 6/1

Tuks (-20.5) 17/20

Madibaz (+20.5) 17/20

Next up it's a clash between two sides with absolutely nothing to play for with seventh-placed Tuks taking on the ninth-placed Madibaz. Tuks have been somewhat resurgent in recent weeks beating CUT and holding Shimlas to a draw on home soil. The Madibaz, on the other hand, well their woes have continued and they are yet to bag a win in the competition.

Verdict: Madibaz (+20.5) 17/20
This should be a high-scoring affair with nothing on the line bar pride. I fancy the visitors to keep it within the plus handicap in what should be a frenetic game.

UJ v Ikeys
UJ Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
UJ 1/5
Draw 25/1

Ikeys 7/2

UJ (-11.5) 17/20

Ikeys(+11.5) 17/20
The game with the most bearing on the semi-finals slots is up next with fourth-placed UJ hosting fifth-placed Ikeys. The hosts currently hold all the cards in terms of qualification for the semis as they sit three points clear of their opponents.

UJ head into this one off the back of a 30-30 draw with Tuks while the visitors make the trip having beaten CUT by seven points in Round 8.

Verdict: Ikeys (+11.5) 17/20
This should be a rather tense affair with both sides essentially needing just a narrow win to claim a spot in next week's semi-finals. As such, the plus looks a solid shout.

NWU v Maties
Fanie du Toit Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
NWU 12/10
Draw 25/1
Maties 13/20

NWU(+3.5) 17/20

Maties (-3.5) 17/20

Our final fixture of the evening will see first take on second with the log-leading Maties travelling to Potchefstroom to take on second-placed NWU. A win for either side would see them claim hosting rights to the final, should they advance that far.

Both teams head into this one in solid form with Maties having managed to go the entire campaign undefeated and NWU only losing one of their games.

Verdict: NWU 12/10
I sense an upset in the making here. Maties haven't looked their all-conquering selves in recent weeks while NWU are the tournament's current form side.
