French Top 14: Toulon v Racing Metro Preview

French heavy-hitters, Racing 92 and Toloun, will lock horns at the U Arena on Sunday the 8th of April.

Second-placed Racing Metro and fourth-placed Toulon will go toe-to-toe at the U Arena on Sunday in a game that will have a massive bearing on their play-off berths. The hosts head into this one in fantastic touch having claimed a victory over Clermont in the European Rugby Champions Cup last weekend. Toulon were also involved in Champions Cup action, going down narrowly to Munster.

I said it last weekend in the preview for Racing's Champions Cup tie but I still simply cannot believe how quickly they have turned their season around. Not only have Racing surged their way up the Top 14 table but they also managed to book a Champions Cup semi-final date with Munster. Not bad for a side that was languishing near the middle of the Top 14 table last November.

Racing have been mightily impressive on the domestic front losing only one of their last four fixtures. That defeat came away to Montpellier and can be chalked down to Racing having an off day rather than there being a gulf in quality between the two sides.

The team from the French capital must still be feeling rather forlorn after they narrowly missed out on pulling off the shock of the Champions Cup quarter-finals. The Parisians gave Munster an almighty scare last weekend as they went down by just a solitary point to their much-fancied rivals. If they can show the same type of determination this weekend, then they may well be able to register a crucial win.

Toulon haven't been in as solid form on the domestic front as Racing but they have rung up some big wins over the past month beating Agen 54-5 and Clermont 49-0. While those results indicate that Toulon have been great on attack, their defence has been the real aspect of their game that has caught the eye.

Verdict: Racing 17/20
Racing really are in red-hot form and I can't see them having too much trouble putting to bed a Toulon side that struggles on the road.
