Runners from Western Cape stables dominate the final field for the R500 000, Grade 2 World Sports Betting 1900 to be run at Greyville in Durban on Saturday, May 19 and the yard of Justin Snaith goes in with four strings to its bow.

Nine of the 13 final acceptors are from the south with only the four-year-old Ideal World gelding Dark Moon Rising from the Paul Lafferty stable carrying the flag for the local yards.

This 1 900m race has for decades been one of the early stepping stones into the Vodacom Durban July, particularly for visiting horses that had not previously seen the course. Some had managed to carry success in this race on to a race double on the first Saturday in July – one being Lightning Shot from the stable of the late Des Rich 41 years ago whose memory is honoured in the name of the popular refreshment venue at the course.

Of this field, 10 will be looking to improve their chances of an invite into the epic event in July including two runners from the Dean Kannemeyer stable, It’s My Turn and The Slade, the former having been hotly fancied to win the big race last year. It’s My Turn has only had two races since the end of last season but ran a nice race in the King’s Cup at Greyville in March suggesting that he could be returning to form.

The Slade, sporting some useful recent form could have his current 40-1 July odds shaved if he carries that form forward. He finished second in the Peninsula Handicap and fourth in the Sledgehammer setting him up for a good showing in this race.

Snaith’s Silvano gelding Platinum Prince is on offer at 35-1 for the July and goes into this race with good recent form as well having finished a close second in the King’s Cup after his third place in the Peninsula Handicap. With Grant van Niekerk in the saddle could head the stable’s four-prong attack.
Also from the Snaith stable is the Silvano gelding Strathdon that has won his last three starts including the Woolavington at Kenilworth and the Cape Summer Stayers at the same venue. This will be his first run since arriving in KwaZulu-Natal and if he can carry that good Cape form forward, he could see his 80-1 July odds trimmed considerably.

Trainer Glen Kotzen’s yard is in good form and his three-year-old Philanthropist colt Pack Leader is likely to have a strong following as the potential winner. His third place in the Investec Cape Derby and second in the Sledgehammer has not gone unnoticed and he is on offer at 25-1 for the July. He will be ridden again by Richard Fourie and has a good inside draw to help his chances.
