Spain Appoint New Coach after World Cup Exit

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed the appointment of Luis Enrique as the new head coach of the national team on a two-year contract.

RFEF president Luis Rubiales decided to remove Julen Lopetegui from the post on the eve of the 2018 World Cup for agreeing to manage Real Madrid after the tournament.

Spain director of football Fernando Hierro was handed the reins on an interim basis for the campaign in Russia, where La Furia Roja were eliminated by the host nation on penalties in the round of 16.

The RFEF revealed last week that Hierro had vacated the role and would not be returning to his previous position, leaving Rubiales with two vacancies to fill.

However, it was announced on Monday that Enrique would lead his country’s charge during the Euro 2020 qualifiers, while Jose Francisco Molina has succeeded Hierro as director of football.
