Aviva Premiership: Round 3 Preview

Aviva Premiership Round 22 Preview

Round 3 of the 2018/19 English Premiership will get underway on Friday the 14th of September.

We were treated to some marvellous rugby last week in England with a number of games ending in massive scorelines. Hopefully, this week provides us with some more pulsating action that accompanies high-scoring thrillers.

Gloucester v Bristol
Friday 14 September
Kingsholm
08:45

To Win (80 Mins)
Gloucester 1/8
Draw 30/1

Bristol 52/10

Gloucester will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run when they take on a competent Bristol Bears outfit this Friday. The hosts head into this game having beaten Northampton 27-16 in the opener and then drew with Bath in Round 2.

Bristol head into Friday's fixture having given a decent account of themselves against Saracens. Despite going down 44-23, the Bears actually lead at half-time and will take a lot of encouragement from their exploits at Allianz Park.

Verdict: Gloucester 1/8
Gloucester tends to deliver the goods at home and I can see them taking this one by seven points or more.

Exeter Chiefs v Sale Sharks
Saturday 15 September
Sandy Park
16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Exeter 1/25
Draw 40/1

Sale 8/1

We kick Saturday's proceedings off with a clash between last year's runners-up Exeter and the Sale Sharks. The hosts head into this one off the back of two impressive displays that saw them beat Leicester 40-6 in Round 1 and beat Wasps 31-42 in Round 2.

Sale's start has been less impressive with the Sharks going down 21-32 to Saracens in the opening weekend and then beating Worcester 21-15 in Round 2.

Verdict: Exeter 1/25
The men from Devonshire have been in solid touch during the opening week and I can see them bagging another big win here. My money is on the hosts taking it by 15 points or more.

Harlequins v Bath Rugby
Saturday 15 September
Twickenham Stoop
16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Harlequins 9/20

Draw 18/1
Bath 37/20

Harlequins will be looking to maintain their spot inside the top four when they welcome winless Bath to London this Saturday. The hosts head into this game off the back of a seven-point defeat to Northampton, while Bath make the trip having drawn 31-31 with Gloucester.

'Quins won last year's clash between the two sides at the Stoop 20-5, while Bath won the reverse tie at the Recreation Ground 38-14.

Verdict: Harlequins 9/20
'Quins look a real threat this year and I can see them registering their second win of the campaign here against a Bath side that has struggled on the road.

Northampton Saints v Saracens
Saturday 15 September
Franklin's Gardens
16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Northampton 3/1
Draw 21/1
Saracens 1/4

Northampton will face the unenviable task of fronting up to Saracens this Saturday. The visitors head into this one having got their campaign off to a flawless start with big wins over Bristol and the Salle Sharks.

Northampton have enjoyed a solid if not spectacular start to their campaign going down 27-16 to Gloucester in the opening round and then bouncing back with a 25-18 Round 2 victory over Harlequins.

Verdict: Saracens 1/4
Yes, Northampton are a tough nut to crack at home but I cannot see them keeping up with this Saracens outfit for the full 80-minutes. My money is on the visitors taking it by nine points or more.

Worcester Warriors v Newcastle Falcons
Saturday 15 September
Sixways
16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Worcester 17/20
Draw 18/1

Newcastle 21/20

The Worcester Warriors will be looking to bag their first win of the season when they take on fellow winless side Newcastle in a battle of the cellar-dwellers. The hosts head into this one off the back of two narrow defeats as they went down 21-15 to Sale last weekend and 20-21 to Wasps in the opening round.

Newcastle have endured a tougher start to their campaign then Worcester as they went down 21-32 to big guns Saracens in the opening round and then 49-33 to Leicester in Round 2.

Verdict: Newcastle 21/20
I quite fancy Newcastle to break their duck here. They have a solid side that are bound to click at some point.

Wasps v Leicester Tigers
Sunday 16 September
Ricoh Arena

16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Wasps 9/20

Draw 20/1
Leicester 19/10

Wasps will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Exeter when they welcome the Leicester Tigers to the Ricoh Arena for Sunday's solitary fixture. The hosts opened their campaign with a narrow one-point away victory over Worcester and then went down 31-42 to Exeter last weekend.

Leicester have also registered a win and a loss this term, going down 40-6 to Exeter in the opening round and then bouncing back to beat Newcastle 49-33.

Verdict: Wasps 9/20
This should be a rather entertaining game with both sides not shy to give the ball some air. I can see Wasps taking a high-scoring affair by six points or more.
