Mitre 10 Cup: Round 6 Preview

Rugby player passes ball

This weekend will see six Round 6 Mitre 10 Cup games take place including an eye-catching clash between Taranaki and Auckland.

Bay of Plenty v Waikato
Friday 21 September
Rotorua International Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
Bay of Plenty 15/20
Draw 16/1

Waikato 12/10

We kick off this weekend's proceedings with an all-Championship affair between Bay of Plenty and
Waikato. The visitors head into this one off the back of an impressive three-game winning streak that has seen them soar to the summit of the Championship, while Bay of Plenty are seven points off pace back in fifth place.

These two sides head into Saturday's clash off the back of contrasting fortunes with Bay of Plenty going down 32-20 to North Harbour, and Waikato beating Hawke's Bay 42-22.

Verdict: Waikato 12/10
The visitors are on a great run of form and offer a lot of value at 12/10.

Hawke's Bay v North Harbour
Saturday 22 September
McLean Park

To Win (80 Mins)
Hawke's Bay 22/10
Draw 19/1
North Harbour 7/20

Hawke's Bay will be hoping to return to the summit of the Championship table when they take on Premiership outfit North Harbour this coming Saturday.

The visitors currently lie fifth in the Championship and will be desperate to bounce back from their 35-23 defeat to Wellington while the hosts return home afrer going down to bang in-form side Waikato 42-22.

Verdict: Hawke's Bay 22/10
I know they are a tier below their visitors but I still fancy Hawke's Bay to claim this one on home soil.

Otago v Canterbury
Saturday 22 September
Forsyth Barr Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
Otago 7/2

Draw 23/1
Canterbury 2/9

Otago will be looking to pull off a minor miracle when they take on reigning champions Canterbury this Saturday. The visitors have been buoyed with a multitude of their All Blacks returning this weekend and will be a tough nut to crack despite being away from home.

The hosts head into this one off the back of an encouraging 24-43 victory over minnows Southland while Canterbury make the trip having gone down by five points to Auckland in a thrilling Sunday encounter.

Verdict: Canterbury 2/9
I can't see Canterbury having too many problems getting one over Otago despite being away from home. My money is on the visitors taking this one by 13 points or more.

Taranaki v Auckland
Saturday 22 September
Yarrow Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
Taranaki 19/10

Draw 24/1
Auckland 4/10

Undefeated Auckland make the trip to Taranaki this Saturday with the hosts' Top 4 chances hanging on the line. Taranaki head into this one in last place on the Premiership standings and need a win here to ensure they head into the final few weeks of the round-robin phase still in contention for a semi-final berth.

Auckland have no such problem with a win here set to ensure them of a semi-final berth.

Verdict: Auckland 4/10
The visitors are having a magnificent season and I can't that ending against a struggling Taranaki outfit.

Tasman v Counties Manukau

Sunday 23 September
Trafalgar Park

To Win (80 Mins)
Tasman 2/9
Draw 25/1
Counties Manukau 7/2

*Forecast odds

Tasman will be looking to build on their 10 point victory over Manawatu when they take on a Counties Manukau side that have been rather hit-and-miss this season. The hosts currently occupy second position on the Premiership standings while Counties are second to last.

Tasman head into Sunday's fixture off the back of a hardfought 10-point away win over Manawatu while Counties make the trip having gone down by 41 points to Wellington.

Verdict: Tasman 2/9
The Markos may not be enjoying their most fluid of season but I can still see them taking a struggling Counties outfit to task here. My money is on the hosts taking this one by 18 points or more.

Manawatu v Wellington
Sunday 23 September
Central Energy Trust Arena

To Win (80 Mins)
Manawatu 5/1

Draw 30/1
Wellington 1/8

Manawatu will be looking to bounce back from their 10-point mid-week defeat to Tasman when they take on a Wellington side that is gunning for a home semi-final berth. The hosts desperately need the points here in order to keep their slim hopes of a Championship semi-final alive.

Wellington head into this one in a far more healthy position with their 12-53 Round 5 victory over Counties Manukau seeing them move within two points of Premiership leaders Auckland.

Verdict: Wellington 1/8
The visitors are in solid touch and should take this one by a margin in excess of 15 points.
