French Top 14: Round 7 Preview

Rugby players engage in a tackle

The French Top 14 enters its seventh round this coming weekend and there's a stellar fixtures list for rugby fans to sink their teeth into.

La Rochelle v Clermont
Saturday 6 October

Stade Marcel Delfrande

To Win (80 Mins)
La Rochelle 6/10
Draw 17/1
Clermont 27/20

Clermont will be looking to make it six wins from seven starts when they take on a hit-and-miss La Rochelle side this coming weekend. The visitors currently sit at the top of the standings while La Rochelle are back in ninth.

The hosts come into this one off the back of their defeat of the season, which saw them go down 34-22 to the Bordeaux Begles, while Clermont make the trip having beaten Toulon 28-8.

Verdict: Clermont 27/20
The Vulcans are in great form an I can't see them having too man troubles dispatching a La Rochelle side on the wane. I can see the visitors taking this one by eight points or more.

Grenoble v Bordeaux Begles
Saturday 6 October
Stade des Alpes

To Win (80 Mins)
Grenoble 6/10
Draw 17/1
Bordeaux 14/10

Grenoble will be looking to pull clear of the relegation zone when they take on seventh-placed Bordeaux this Saturday. The hosts have only managed one victory this season while Bordeaux have won three and drawn one of their six fixtures.

The two sides head into Saturday's clash off the back of contrasting results with Bordeaux beating La Rochelle by 12 points and Grenoble going down 34-6 to Lyon.

Verdict: Bordeaux 14/10
This should be a rather tense affair with Grenoble performing a lot better at home than on the road. I can see Bordeaux edging it by around seven points.

Pau v Perpignan
Saturday 6 October
Stade du Hameau

To Win (80 Mins)
Pau 1/8
Draw 28/1
Perpignan 47/10

Cellar-dwellers Pau face the unenviable task of taking on 10th placed Pau at the Stade du Hameau. The hosts haven't exactly shot the lights out thus far but they have been able to run some of the big guns close as well as bag a win over Toulon on home soil.

The hosts head into the fixture off the back of an impressive 25-28 away win over Perpignan's fellow relegation Agen. Perpignan didn't fare as well in Round 6 as they went down 20-23 to Montpellier. They did manage to pick up a losing bonus point from the clash, however.

Verdict: Pau 1/8
While Perpignan have caused more illustrious opposition trouble on their home ground I cannot see them doing anything away from home. My money is on Pau taking this one by 10 points or more.

Racing Metro 92 v Lyon
Saturday 6 October
Paris La Defense Arena

To Win (80 Mins)
Racing 2/9
Draw 21/1

Lyon 32/10

Third-placed Racing Metro take on fifth-placed Lyon in Saturday's penultimate fixture. The hosts have enjoyed a fast start to the 2018/19 season winning four of their opening six fixtures with their latest victory being a hard-fought 16-17 win over second-placed Stade Francais.

Like their opponents, Lyon have also only suffered two defeats this term and head into this one off the back of a 34-6 bonus point victory over minnows Grenoble.

Verdict: Racing 2/9
I'm expecting a second-half blitz from Racing Metro to see them to a victory in excess of seven points.

Toulouse v Agen
Saturday 6 October
Stade Ernest-Wallon

To Win (80 Mins)
Toulouse 1/50
Draw 60/1

Agen 17/2

Toulouse will be looking to arrest a two losing streak when they play host to plucky underdogs Agen in Saturday's final fixture. The hosts have slipped down to eighth place on the table after their 22-26 home defeat to reigning champions, Castres.

Agen also head into this one off the back of a narrow defeat as the went down by three points to Pau last weekend.

Verdict: Toulouse 1/50
I'm expecting a big response from Toulouse here. They have a good side who shouldn't be troubled by inferior opposition such as Agen.

Castres v Stade Francais
Sunday 7 October
Stade Pierre Fabre

To Win (80 Mins)
Castres 1/4

Draw 20/1
Stade 3/1

Verdict: Castres 1/4
This should be a rather tense affair with both sides likely to take conservative approaches to the game. My money is on the hosts edging it by between two and seven points.

Montpellier v Toulon
Sunday 7 October
GGL Stadium

To Win (80 Mins)
Montpellier 2/13
Draw 25/1

Toulon 17/4

Verdict: Montpellier 2/13
I can see Montpellier taking this Toulon side to task. The visitors simply have no potency when they have the ball, while Montpellier have shown they can be devastating on their day. My money is on the hosts taking this one by 15 points or more.
