Pro14: Round 6 South African Matches Preview

Rugby Players enter a scrum

Shaun Goosen takes a look at the two South African teams playing in the Pro 14 this weekend. The Cheetahs take on Edinburgh and the Kings tackle Treviso.

Edinburgh v Cheetahs
5 October 20h35
BT Murrayfield

To Win
Edinburgh 1/7
Draw 28/1
Cheetahs 47/10

The Toyota Cheetahs will have another shot at a rare away win and a first of the season when they take on Edinburgh at Murrayfield on Friday.

The Cheetahs’ current record reads: played five, lost four, won zero. With a 101 points difference, they also suffer the indignity of having conceded the most points in the tournament thus far, never mind their overall log points tally.

Considering the fine fettle they showed last season on their way to the quarterfinals, it really is a wonder that Franco Smith’s men are still without a win in 2018-19. The loss of injured skipper Oupa Mohoje earlier in the season was a big blow, but one would have expected the side to fight on in spite of that setback.

Coming up against Edinburgh this weekend, they find themselves with another opportunity to get off the mark against a side that has managed just two wins themselves this campaign. While a weather forecast of clear skies may have ordinarily suited the Cheetahs’ style of play, it will mean nothing if they cannot make their tackles and dominate up front.

Having fallen narrowly to Cardiff in a more accomplished effort last weekend, the men from the Free State should take some heart into Friday’s encounter, albeit against a more physical Edinburgh side.

Verdict: Cheetahs 47/10
I may be beginning to sound like a stuck record, but I’m expecting the Cheetahs to come good this Friday and claim a slender win of within seven-points.

Benetton Treviso v Southern Kings
6 October 20h00
Stadio Comunale di Monigo

To Win
Treviso 1/14
Draw 43/1
Kings 13/2

The Southern Kings can be confident of beating a struggling Benneton outfit on Saturday.

While they may not necessarily be title contenders, the Kings will be raring to go after a great first-half performance against Scarlets on the weekend. Deon Davids’ side trailed by just seven-points at the interval, before succumbing against one of the competition’s finest teams.

Especially after their superb 38-28 win over Glasgow two weeks ago, there is cause for optimism for the Port Elizabethans. Coming up against Benetton, they will realize that a first-ever away Pro14 win is well within their grasp.

Key for them will be to put in a full 80-minute showing. The Kings have been found guilty of losing concentration at vital times in the recent past and will need to remain in focus if they hope to up their win column this season.

Playing away from home is never easy, but the Kings will find solace in the fact that Benetton are without a win in their last three after a rather good start for the Italian-based side.

Verdict: Southern Kings 13/2
While some may view this pick as more hopeful than anything else, Benetton do lack a degree of quality and may just fall foul of the determination of the Kings.
