French Top 14: Round 10 Preview

Rugby players engage in a tackle

The French Top 14 returns with a bang this weekend with some intriguing Round 10 fixtures set to go down.

After a brief hiatus, French top tier domestic rugby returns this weekend for what is set to be an action-packed Round 10. The highlight of the weekend will see third-placed Stade Francais take on a resurgent La Rochelle, while the clash between log-leaders Clermont and play-off hopefuls Lyon should also be a solid spectacle.

Bordeaux Begles v Toulon
Saturday 24 November
Stade Chaban Delmas

15:45

To Win (80 Mins)
Bordeaux
Draw

Toulon

*odds to be added upon release

Toulon will be looking to breathe life into what has been a horrid domestic campaign when they take on the eighth-placed Bordeaux Begles. The visitors currently reside in 12-place on the log and have only won three of the nine games they have played thus far.

Bordeaux have enjoyed a more productive start to the season winning four of their nine fixtures while drawing another. The Begles have been decent on their own patch and remain undefeated at the Stade Chaban Delmas.

Verdict: Bordeaux
The Begles have already beaten big guns Clermont on their home patch this term and I can't see them slipping up against a struggling Toulon side.

Perpignan v Castres
Saturday 24 November

Stade Aime Giral
17:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Perpignan

Draw
Castres

*odds to be added upon release

Our next clash is something of a 'David versus Goliath' affair with reigning champions Castres travelling to last-placed Perpignan. The hosts are yet to win a game this season and head into Saturday's encounter with a points differential of -109.

Castres haven't exactly shot the lights out this term but they have managed to win five of their opening nine games, with two of those wins coming on the road.

Verdict: Castres
The defending champions should have no problems beating lowly Perpignan this Saturday. My money is on the hosts taking it by eight points or more.

Agen v Montpellier
Saturday 24 November

Stade Armandie
17:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Agen

Draw
Montpellier

*odds to be added upon release

Agen will be looking to pull away from the relegation zone when they play host to a hit-and-miss Montpellier outfit this weekend. The visitors have been far from impressive this season but have managed to four wins and a draw from their opening nine games, which sees them sit ninth on the table.

The hosts have won two and drawn one of their opening nine and currently sit in 13th-position on the log. A win here could see them move into 11th provided results go their way.

Verdict: Montpellier
I suspect Montpellier may struggle in the first stanza as the majority of their players have not played in over a fortnight. But a strong second half showing is likely to see them to a win.

Racing Metro 92 v Grenoble
Saturday 25 November

Paris La Defense Arena
17:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Racing
Draw

Grenoble

*odds to be added upon release

We have yet another big boy versus little guy clash this Saturday with fifth-placed Racing Metro taking on a plucky Grenoble outfit, who currently find themselves sitting in 11th spot on the standings.

Racing have been solid if not spectacular this term winning six of the nine fixtures they have played thus far. They have impressed against the big guns but have been slightly inconsistent against the minnows.

Grenoble have been very dogged this term and have already caused one upset drawing 27-27 with log-leaders Clermont at the start of the month.

Verdict: Racing
Grenoble have been solid at home this term but their away form is nothing to write home about. I can see the visitors going down by more than 15 points here.

Pau v Toulouse
Saturday 25 November
Stade du Hameau
17:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Pau
Draw
Toulouse

*odds to be added upon release

The last of the Saturday fixtures that we will take a look at is the game between 10th placed Pau and second-placed Toulouse.

Pau struggled before the international break losing two away fixtures while narrowly avoiding what would have been an embarrassing home defeat to minnows Perpignan. Toulouse enjoyed a much more profitable run-in to the break beating Perpignan by 18 points and Bordeaux by 40-points.

Verdict: Toulouse
They could well be without a few of their international stars but I can still see Toulouse getting the job done here.

Stade Francais v La Rochelle
Sunday 25 November
Stade Jean Bouin

13:30

To Win (80 Mins)
Stade
Draw

La Rochelle

*odds to be added upon release

The first of Sunday's doubleheader should be a stunner with third-placed Stade Francais taking on sixth-placed La Rochelle.

As touched upon earlier in the piece, La Rochelle have been in great form of late and head into this one having won their last three fixtures. Included in this sequence of results were wins over Clermont and Toulon.

Stade haven't been as solid lately and head into this fixture off the back of a 41-6 away defeat to Lyon.

Verdict: Stade
This should be a great game to watch and I would suggest negating the handicap or outright win markets and rather have a go on the overs points markets when live betting opens on the fixture. If you must have an ante-post strike, I would recommend taking Stade on the straight win.

Clermont v Lyon
Sunday 25 November

Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin
17: 50

To Win (80 Mins)
Clermont
Draw
Lyon

*odds to be added upon release

Round 10 of the 2018/19 Top 14 season will come to a close at the Stade Marcel Michelin with log-leading Clermont taking on fourth-placed Lyon. Both sides have enjoyed magnificent starts to the campaign with the hosts winning six and drawing one of their opening nine fixtures, and Lyon winning five and drawing one of their nine.

In terms of recent results, Lyon head into this one off the back of a polished 41-6 home victory over Stade Francais, while Clermont drew with Grenoble last time out.

Verdict: Clermont
This should be a very tight affair and I wouldn't be surprised if Lyon claims an upset win. As such, I won't be having a strike on this game. If I had a gun to my head and was forced to back one of these sides, my money would go on the hosts simply due to home ground advantage.
