Giants Get one Over the Durban Heat in PE

Morne Morkel batting for the Durban Heat

The Nelson Mandela Bay Giants earned a nine wicket victory over the Durban Heat in the Heat’s third game of the Mzansi Super League at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Friday night.

Batting first the Heat were under pressure early with the loss of Morné van Wyk for a duck, Heinrich Klaasen for four and David Miller for a duck.

The Heat were 37 for three in the seventh over with Hashim Amla and Khaya Zondo together at the crease.

Amla was trapped in front by Imran Tahir for 12 with the score on 37; he was the fourth wicket to fall in the eighth over.

From there Zondo and captain Albie Morkel tried to set the Durban side on the right track before the former chopped on for a promising 26.

Morkel and Vernon Philander then combined for what looked like a partnership that might get the Heat to a defendable total.

In a freak moment in the fifteenth over Philander hit Morkel at the non-strikers end which meant the captain had to retire hurt on 28 off just 21 balls.

Philander fell valiantly in the nineteenth over for 26, and Keshav Maharaj finished not out for 22 off 20 balls.

The Heat went into the break on 127 for six off their 20 overs.

In reply captain of the Giants Jon-Jon Smuts lead the home side well with a measured 62 not out off 52 deliveries.

The skipper was well supported by young Marco Marais who scored 42 and Englishman Ben Duckett who ended 21 not out.

Vernon Philander was the pick of the Heat bowlers up front when he picked up one for 17 in his three overs.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj conceded 20 runs in his four overs.

Speaking after the game Khaya Zondo admitted it was difficult to lose the talisman Morkel at such a crucial stage.

“It was really unfortunate that Albie’s innings ended like that,” he said in the post-match interview. “His injury was just one of those freak things that happens in cricket.

“He is getting scans and we will know what the outcome is later but we are hoping for the best.

“As a team we have time to regroup and get ready for our next game and start again next week.”

The Durban Heat take on the Paarl Rocks at Kingsmead in their fourth Mzansi Super League clash on Wednesday, 28 November.
