Van Jaarsveld Ton Helps Dolphins to Fighting Draw

Vaughn van Jaarsveld lifts his bat to celebrate his ton

A second hundred of the 4-Day Franchise Series campaign for Vaughn van Jaarsveld on day four of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ clash with the Multiply Titans at Kingsmead, helped the home side wrestle a draw.

Having to overturn 195 runs in their second innings to ask the Titans to bat again, the Dolphins reached 302 for eight, a lead of 107 with just over 10 overs left in the match, when both sides decided that they would call it a draw.

The Titans continued the morning how they finished the third evening’s session with Eldred Hawkin taking a liking to the Dolphins bowlers.

Hawkin eventually ran out of partners, finishing on 84 not out, with Tshepo Moreki skying a Okuhle Cele delivery to Vaughn van Jaarsveld and then two balls later Alfred Mothoa edged one to be caught by keeper Grant Roelofsen.

That wicket handed Cele his third of the innings and closed the Titans innings on 381.

The Dolphins started well with the bat and negotiated their way past 50 without losing a wicket. SJ Erwee was then caught behind off spinner Shaun von Berg for 17, the score on 62 runs.

Cody Chetty was dismissed for 10 and Khaya Zondo and Van Jaarsveld put on a defiant 78 runs for the third wicket as they whittled down the deficit.

Zondo was dismissed for 25 and Dane Vilas followed for a duck.

Van Jaarsveld then stole the show as he stroked his way to his second century of the season. It was an effortless knock from the left-hander who hit 16 fours and a six in his 133.

He was the next wicket to fall though, LBW to Mothoa with the score on 213, the Dolphins in the lead by 18 runs.

Sibz Makhanya made a solid 32 before he was caught behind and then Eathan Bosch was LBW six runs later for five. The Dolphins were 238 for seven, leading the Titans by 43 runs.

A solid partnership was struck up between Grant Roelofsen and first innings hero Keshav Maharaj.

Maharaj added to his first innings half century with 23 runs before he was well caught down the leg side in a partnership of 42 with the resolute Roelofsen.

Roelofsen and Lwandiswa Zuma then negotiated enough deliveries for Titans captain Shaun von Berg to call an end to the game.

Roelofsen batted with poise and resolution as he ended on 46 not out from 94 deliveries. Zuma was solid as he faced 20 balls without scoring a run.

The Dolphins ended on 302 for eight.

There is a break in the domestic franchise season as from 16 November the Mzansi Super League takes centre stage.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins will play their next 4-Day Franchise Series clash against the bizhub Highveld Lions at the Bivest Wanderers from 19-22 December.
