Carlisle Best Bets

Race 1: POGUE (8)
Trainer: Donald McCain
Jockey: Brian Hughes

Backed into odds-on, POGUE was a costly failure at Kelso last time but lost no caste in that narrow defeat at the hooves of Oleg. It’s not only strong form to take into this, but the selection is getting a very handy 5lb from the penalised Captain Zebo and he should take the spoils.

Race 5 J’AI FROID (7)
Trainer: Ben Case
Jockey: Max Kendrick

Case sent out a 66-1 winner at the Cheltenham Festival, had a winner at Newbury on Friday and can do little wrong at present. One of his recent scorers, J’AI FROID, has gone up 5lb in the weights for his troubles but that Exeter triumph marked notable improvement and he’s taken to confirm his superiority over Some Can Dance here.

Race 5: DUSKY LARK (1) Each Way
Trainer: Robert Walford
Jockey: James Best

This is a competitive heat and I shall select DUSKY LARK with the Each Way instruction attached… the nine-year-old is fresher than most of his foes with just three runs under his belt all season, but the indications are he is getting better and he should be followed through the Spring whatever happens here his recent course Second has worked out well and he can prove this three mile trip is within his stamina compass.

Race 7: PILEON (1)
Trainer: Philip Hobbs
Jockey: Richard Johnson

The Hobbs stable is really finding its feet and as most of these are unraced the point-to-point form of PILEON can come into play. The five-year-old changed hands for £60,000 after finishing second in a maiden point in December and is the subject of encouraging reports from his trainer’s Sandhills base.

Downpatrick Best Bets

Race 1: MASON JAR (5)
Trainer: Hilary McLoughlin
Jockey: Mark Walsh

One of the few in this that is getting better with racing experience, MASON JAR finished off his race strongly when third to The Holy One at Thurles. He gave the impression a move up the distance ladder was the order of the day so the extra 600 metres and stiff climb to the finishing line can play to his strengths.

Race 3: FROM EDEN (5)
Trainer: Gordon Elliott
Jockey: Jack Kennedy

FROM EDEN landed some good bets when opening his account and did nothing wrong when finding only Thereisnodoubt too strong at Gowran Park earlier in the month. Gordon Elliott equips him with first-time blinkers and under the in-form Jack Kennedy, he will be hard to beat.
