Super Rugby 2019: Round 5 Saturday Preview

Super Rugby - players engage in a scrum

There are five Round 5 Super Rugby games taking place on Saturday the 16th of March. Darry Worthington previews them below.

There's a slightly condensed Super Rugby fixtures list in store this Saturday with only three games set to take place. Despite the small number of fixtures, we should still be in for a cracking day of rugby with some intriguing games on the offering including a clash between the Sunwolves and the Reds.

We kick proceedings off between two Australian Conference sides in the form of the Sunwolves and the Reds. The hosts have enjoyed a solid start to their season beating the Chiefs 30-15 away from home while giving both the Blues (28-20) and Waratahs (30-31) massive frights.

The Reds have also proved to be a dogged outfit in 2019 but are yet to win a game with their best result being a 36-31 bonus point defeat to the Highlanders. They have narrowly missed out on claiming losing bonus points from their two follow following fixtures as they went down 12-22 to the Crusaders in Round 3 and 28-17 to the Waratahs last weekend.

When the two sides met last year the Sunwolves ran riot racking up a mesmerizing 63-28 victory at the same ground the two sides will lock horns on this coming weekend.

Verdict: Sunwolves 4/5 *Forecast Odds
While I don't think they'll rack up as big a score as they did last season, I can still see the Sunwolves getting one over a somewhat injury stricken Reds side.

Highlanders 19/10

Crusaders 4/9

Handicap

Highlanders (+7.5) 9/10
Crusaders (-7.5) 9/10

Saturday's headline clash will see the Highlanders and Crusaders square off in a New Zealand derby. The visitors will be looking to make it a clean sweep from their games against domestic foes having already beaten the Blues (22-24), the Hurricanes (38-22) and the Chiefs (57-28).

The Highlanders haven't had as great a start to the season as their counterparts, and head into this one off the back of successive defeats with their first loss being a 24-19 Round 3 defeat to the in-form Rebels and their second being last weekend's 25-22 loss to the Hurricanes.

The two sides met twice last year with the Highlanders registering a 25-17 victory out in Otago and the Crusaders winning the Canterbury game 45-22.

Verdict: Highlanders (+7.5) 9/10 *Forecast Handicap
The handicap looks very well set here. While the Crusaders are more than capable of clearing this line, I'm leaning towards the hosts on the plus for a very small amount of money.

Lions v Rebels

To Win (80 Mins)
Lions 2/5
Draw 25/1
Rebels 18/10

Handicap
Lions (-6.5) 9/10

Rebels (+6.5) 9/10
*Forecast Handicap

We'll close out the Round out in Johannesburg where two of the most enterprising teams in the tournament will go head-to-head, with the rejuvenated Rebels taking on the feisty Lions.

Both teams head into the clash off the back of impressive wins with the Lions bouncing back from a disappointing fortnight, that saw them lose to the Bulls and Stormers, by beating the Jaguares 47-39. The Rebels, meanwhile, continued their perfect start to the season as they staged a dramatic second-half comeback to beat the Brumbies 29-26.

While the clash as a whole should be an interesting one, there is an individual battle that should be a scorcher with maverick pivots Elton Janjties and Quade Cooper going head-to-head. Expect both fly-halves to bring out their party tricks in Johannesburg this Saturday evening.

Verdict: Rebels (+6.5) 9/10 *Forecast Handicap
This should be an absolute spectacle with both teams set to run it from all quarters. The Lions have been as astute defensively this year, which is why I'm going to back the Rebels to stay within the plus line in what should be a really high-scoring affair.
