Tau Hits Brace as Bafana Bafana Book Afcon Date

Libya vs South Africa Preview

Percy Tau scored two magnificent goals as South Africa booked their spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Libya at the Stade Taieb Mhiri.

Bafana Bafana only needed point to progress but former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Tau struck either side of a Ahmad Benali penalty with all the goals coming in the second half in what was fiery encounter in the neutral country of Tunisia.

Tau’s first goal was thing of beauty as he unleashed a superb left-footed strike from just outside the box that hit top corner and gave Libya keeper Mohamed Nashnuch no chance.

The strike was important as it came just four minutes after a goalless first stanza where Libya were the dominant side.

The Mediterranean Knights however were back in the game 10 minutes after falling behind after Bafana keeper Darren Keet fouled a Libyan attacker.

Benali calmly converted from the spot and the game was back on a knife-edge and Libya sniffed the win that would put them through to the Afcon tournament.

However, the 1-1 scoreline only lasted three minutes as Tau beat Nashnuch, this time with his right foot, after a cleverly worked corner from Bafana.

The diminutive forward still had a lot to do but found the back of the net from tight angle to give South Africa a vital lead with more than 20 minutes remaining.

Keet, who was having an outstanding game besides giving away the penalty, made a superb save on 77 minutes to preserve his team’s lead.

Bafana repelled the Libya attacks for the remainder of the game in front of a frustrated Libyan crowd, who started throwing objects onto the field in frustration.

Tau should have completed his hat-trick a minute before the end as he shot wide when one-on-one with the keeper but it mattered little as Bafana made sure they are one of the 24 teams that will compete in Africa’s biggest football competition.

Bafana qualify second in the group behind Nigeria with the Afcon tournament starting in Egypt on 21 June.
