Super Rugby: Round 10 Saturday Preview

Super Rugby - players engage in a scrum

There are three Round 10 Super Rugby games taking place on Saturday the 20th of April with the pick of the action being the all New Zealand affair between the Highlanders and Blues.

It may be a limited fixtures list this Saturday with only three Super Rugby games taking place but we should still be in for some cracking oval ball action with two of the three games being local derbies.

The day will start off in style with the Highlanders taking on the Blues in a Kiwi derby. We then jet across the Tasman for an all Australia affair between the Waratahs and a smarting Rebels outfit. While the day closes out down in Cape Town where the Stormers will look to build on their marvellous victory over the aforementioned Rebels by beating the Brumbies.

Highlanders v Blues
Forsyth Barr Stadium

09:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Highlanders 9/10
Draw 25/1
Blues 9/10

Handicap
Highlanders
Blues
We start the day off with what promises to be an absolute belter of a derby between the Highlanders and the Blues. The visitors saw their four-game winning streak halted last weekend as hey went down 33-29 to the Chiefs. The Highlanders were also on the losing side last weekend as they were hammered 43-17 by the Crusaders.

These two sides have already met once this term with the Blues running out 33-26 victors at Eden Park. The men from Auckland ended their long losing streak to domestic opposition during the aforementioned game and will be confident of repeating the dose here.

Verdict: Blues 9/10
Only six points separate the two sides on the New Zealand Conference standings and this game could have a massive bearing on who takes one of the play-off berths. While one would expect a cagey affair in this scenario, neither side will be keen to go the conservative route as they are not that way inclined. My play here is on the Blues.

Waratahs v Rebels
SCG
11:45

To Win (80 Mins)
Waratahs 21/20
Draw 25/1

Rebels 9/10

Handicap
Waratahs (+1.5) 9/10
Rebels (-1.5) 9/10

The second and final derby of the day will see the Waratahs and Rebels square off at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Both sides had weeks to forget last week as the Rebels went down 24-41 to a very youthful Stormers side in Melbourne while the Waratahs were forced to stand down talismanic fullback Israel Folau due to post the Wallaby made on his social media account.

The two sides are currently duking it out for top spot on the Australian Conference standings with the Rebels seven points clear at the summit, but the Waratahs do have a game in hand over their domestic foes.

Verdict: Rebels 9/10
This will be the first time these two sides meet this year and it’s sure to be an interesting game. I have a feeling the Rebels will just edge it.

Stormers v Brumbies
DHL Newlands
15:05

To Win (80 Mins)
Stormers 1/3
Draw 25/1
Brumbies 24/10

Handicap
Stormers (-8.5) 9/10
Brumbies (+8.5) 9/10

The Round 10 action will come to a close at Newlands where the Stormers will play host to Australian opposition in the form of the Brumbies. The men from Cape Town added some gloss to what was a poor tour of Australia last week as they comfortably beat the Rebels in Melbourne. The result was a much-needed confidence boost for Robbie Fleck’s men who had lost their previous three games on tour.

The Brumbies also enjoyed a solid time of it last weekend as they beat the Lions 31-20 in Canberra. This was just their third win of the campaign but does put them back in the running for an outside chance at making the play-offs.

Verdict: Stormers (-8.5) 9/10
A lot of their big names will return this weekend, and I can see that firing the Stormers past the handicap against a very mediocre Brumbies outfit.
