F1 2019: Spanish Grand Prix Preview

Formula One 2019: Season Preview

Ferrari will be looking to end Mercedes early-season dominance when the F1 field lines up for the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday the 12th of May.

It looks like Mercedes may just be marching away with the Constructor’s and Drivers’ title this year with the Silver Arrows boys claiming wins in the opening four races. They have also managed to register one-two finishes in all this season’s races. Needless to say, Ferrari faces an uphill battle in reeling their arch rivals.

Spanish Grand Prix
Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya
Sunday 12 May

To Win Race Outright
Lewis Hamilton 27/20
Valtteri Bottas 5/2
Sebastian Vettel 7/2
Charles LeClerc 9/2
Max Verstappen 12/1
Pierre Gasly 150/1
Kimi Raikkonen 1000/1

Previous Race
Another race, another Mercedes one-two. This theme is becoming a recurring one fast with the Silver Arrows claiming the first two spots out in Azerbaijan a fortnight ago. Both Mercedes drivers have now won two races with Lewis Hamilton winning in China and Bahrain while Valtteri Bottas won in the opener in Australia and the latest Grand Prix in Azerbaijan.

Ferrari have also been racking up the podiums this season but they have been unable to get anything higher than third with Sebastian adding their third third-place accolade to the mantle by rounding out the podium in Baku. Vettel was followed across the line by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen who finished some 59 seconds before his Charles LeClerc brought the second Ferrari across the line.

The top six was rounded out by Sergio Perez while youngsters Lando Norris (8th) and Lance Stroll were sandwiched between Carlos Sainz (7th) and Kimi Raikkonen (10th).

Track
The Circuit de Catalunya offers a great blend of high and low-speed corners which really tests the reliability of the faster cars on track. While these corners require dexterous braking, they don’t offer much room for overtaking as they are some of the narrowest on the calendar. As such, pole position will be a rather key factor here.

In terms of the weather for this weekend, there’s a slight bit of rain being forecast for the qualifying sessions as well as race day, but at this point, there are no series showers being predicted (*article was written on Tuesday the 7th of May)

Last year saw a Mercedes one-two (would you honestly bet against this happening again?) with Hamilton claiming first and Bottas second, while third place was taken by Max Verstappen.

Value Bet – Max Verstappen -Podium Finish @ 7/4
Max has enjoyed his time in Spain third at the venue last year and first back in 2016. It’s a track Red Bull cars tend to do well on as well with Daniel Ricciardo also steering a Red Bull to third place in 2017.

I fancy Red Bull’s podium streak to continue in Spain this year. And at 7/4, Verstappen offers great value to add to this run.

To Win Race Outright – Lewis Hamilton @27/20
Hamilton has the best record out of all the driver on track having won three Spanish Grand Prix. He won the 2014 edition as well as the 2017 and 2018 editions. And you’d have to be a brave man to bet against him especially with the odds on him making three in a row in Spain sitting at over even money.
