Pacific Nations Cup: Samoa v United States Preview

International Rugby: South Africa v Wales Preview

Round 2 of the 2019 Pacific Nations Cup will kick off on Saturday the 3rd of August with a clash between Samoa and the United States.

Samoa will be looking to follow up their Round 1 victory over Tonga when they take on a United States team who also head into the second round of the tournament off the back of an impressive victory as they tore neighbours Canada apart last Saturday.

The Samoans got their 2019 Pacific Nations Cup campaign off to a brilliant start as they beat fellow islanders Tonga 17-25 in atrocious conditions out in Apia. The win will have pleased head coach Steve Jackson enormously as his forwards, who have often struggled to front up against their Tongan counterparts, put in a good showing at the setpiece.

While the tournament is essentially being used to fine-tune preparations for the upcoming Rugby World Cup, Samoa will be eager to get the win here as they lost to the United States for the first time ever last year going down 30-29 in November.

United States
The United States put in a great performance in Round 1 running in six tries on their way to a 47-19 victory over their neighbours. Fly-half AJ MacGinty was one of the stand out players for the States with the Sale Sharks man having a very good day with the boot.

Samoa will provide a much sterner test this weekend, and they Americans will need to be more defensively astute as they conceded a couple of soft second-half tries against Canada last weekend.

Verdict: United States (+)
The United States will be looking to get another memorable win over the Samoan here. And while I can't see them doing it, I can see them running the islanders close. As such, I'll be backing the plus line.
