French Top 14: Round 7 Preview

Rugby players engage in a tackle

Darry Worthington takes a look at the seven Round 7 French Top 14 fixtures being played between Saturday the 12th of October and Sunday the 13th of October.

The French Top 14 has been a very unpredictable beast this year but there is one constant; an every improving Lyon side. The Wolves currently sit at the top of the standings having won all six of their opening fixtures. Will they be able to keep up the pace or will they drop points this coming weekend?
Bayonne v Montpellier
Saturday 12 October
Stade Jean Dauger

To Win (80 Mins)
Bayonne 13/20
Draw 20/1

Montpellier 5/4

Surprise package Bayonne will be looking to claim yet another big scalp when they take on a hit-and-miss Montpellier outfit in the weekend's opener.

The hosts currently lie in their place on the log having won four of their opening six fixtures, with their latest victory last weekend's 27-29 win over Agen.

Montpellier have been far less consistent thus far and head into this game with only two wins from their first few fixtures. They fared rather poorly last weekend going down 20-13 to an understrength Clermont outfit.

Verdict: Bayonne 13/20
My money is on the plucky newcomers claiming yet another big name scalp here.

Toulouse v Castres
Saturday 12 October

Stade Ernest-Wallon
To Win (80 Mins)
Toulouse 3/10
Draw 25/1
Castres 5/2

Reigning champions Toulouse will be looking to move clear of the relegation zone by getting a win over fifth-placed Castres.

The hosts have endured a torrid start to the season and have only won two of their opening six games. They head into this one off the back of a rather embarrassing 29-3 defeat to minnows Brive.

Castres have enjoyed a far better start to the season than their counterparts and have won three of their six fixtures while picking up multiple bonus-points. They head into this one off the back of a resounding 46-16 victory over Castres.

Verdict: Castres 5/2
I fancy the upset here. Toulouse have been in wretched form and I reckon the misery will be piled on by Castres.

Racing Metro 92 v Agen
Saturday 12 October
Paris La Defense Arena

To Win (80 Mins)

Racing 1/12
Draw 30/1

Agen 57/10

Agen will be looking to upset the applecart when they travel to Paris to take on a struggling Racing 92 outfit.

The hosts have only claimed two wins from their first six games and currently lie in 10th position on the table.

Agen have an identical record to that of their opponents and only sit a point off Racing. They were also extremely unlucky to go down to Bayonne last weekend by just two points.

Verdict: Racing 1/12
I have a feeling that the hosts will come good on home soil. My money is on them taking this one by nine to 12 points.

La Rochelle v Brive
Saturday 12 October
Stade Marcel-Delfrandre

To Win (80 Mins)

La Rochelle 1/12
Draw 30/1
Brive 6/1

La Rochelle will be looking to move into mid-table by claiming a bonus-point win over a tricky Brive outfit.

The hosts, like many of the other big guns, have endured a tough old start to the campaign and head into this one with only two wins from their six fixtures. They tasted their fourth defeat of the campaign last weekend as they went down 23-3 to Toulon.

Brive have been slightly more productive during the early salvos of the season and have won half of their games. They head into this encounter off the back of a highly impressive 23-9 victory over Toulouse.

Verdict: La Rochelle 1/12
While they have been poor on the road, La Rochelle have given a decent account of themselves on home soil. I fancy them to bag a win in excess of nine points here.

Lyon v Pau
Saturday 12 October
Stade Gerland

To Win (80 Mins)

Lyon 1/50
Draw 40/1
Pau  9/1

Pacesetters Lyon will be looking to retain their unbeaten record when they take on a Pau side that have won three of their six games.

Lyon kept up their sensational start to the season beating Bordeaux 25-23 last weekend. The results has seen them move five points clear at the top of the ladder.

Pau had a far tougher time of it in Round 9 as they went down 3-31 to Racing Metro.

Verdict: Lyon 1/50
I fancy the hosts to clear any handicap under 18.5 points.

Stade Francais v Toulon
Sunday 13 October

Stade Jean-Bouin

To Win (80 Mins)

Stade 7/10
Draw 20/1

Toulon 12/10

Stade will be looking to claim only their second win of the campaign when they take on a Toulon side that has won three of their first six games.

The two sides head into this one off the back of conflicting results with Toulon beating La Rochelle 23-3 and Stade going down 46-16 to Stade.

Verdict: Stade 7/10
Toulon are very poor on the road and I can see them losing yet another away game this weekend.

Bordeaux v Clermont
Sunday 13 October

Stade Chaban-Delmas

To Win (80 Mins)
Bordeaux 2/13
Draw 25/1

Clermont 17/4

Bordeaux will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they take on a Clermont side who have managed four wins from their first six games.

As touched upon earlier, Bordeaux suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend going down by just two points to a bang in-form Lyon side.

Clermont also managed a positive result in Round 6 as they beat Montpellier by seven points.

Verdict: Bordeaux 2/13
Bordeaux should have far too much firepower for a Clermont side that is missing a number of stars.
