PSL: Week Nine Preview

Week Nine Preview

Our soccer analyst previews the PSL Week Nine action which kicks off on Friday 25 October 2019.

This week’s Absa Premiership action is headlined by the top of the table clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs while two Telkom Knockout Last 16 rematches take centre stage as Orlando Pirates visit Stellenbosch and Golden Arrows host Polokwane City. Elsewhere, Cape Town City will be hoping to turn their fortunes around against resurgent Maritzburg United. Here’s our predictions:

Friday 25 October

Cape Town City 15/20
Draw 22/10
Maritzburg United 17/4
Cape Town City have been dreadful this season and they head into this encounter off the back of a an eight-match winless run and they have only kept one clean sheet in the last 10 games. Benni McCarthy’s men crashed out of the Telkom Knockout after giving up a 1-0 lead to lose to Kaizer Chiefs on penalties the last time out.

They come up against a Maritzburg United side that is undefeated in their last three games across all competitions, having won their last two games and overcame Bidvest Wits on penalties in the Telkom Knockout. The Team of Choice might be playing away from home, but they have the momentum hence why I’m backing them.

SuperSport United 5/4
Draw 18/10
Black Leopards 26/10
Bradley Grobler continued his superb scoring form last week when he equalized for SuperSport United against Baroka in the Telkom Knockout. Snatching a penalty shootout victory from the jaws of a defeat was the much-needed boost for Matsatsantsa ahead of tough match against Luc Eymael’s men.

Leopards are still adapting to the Belgian tactician’s methods and they will be without Khuliso Mudau who was sent off for a second bookable offence against Highlands Park in the Telkom Knockout this past weekend. It remains to be seen what newly-signed Edwin Gyimah and Thobani Mncwango have in store for Lidoda Duvha. Put your money on the hosts.

Saturday 26 October

Golden Arrows 14/10
Draw 19/10
Polokwane City 43/20
This is a Telkom Knockout Last 16 rematch as these sides went toe-to-toe this past weekend with Arrows managing to squeak past their opponents with the aid of an extra time own goal. Polokwane City strangely didn’t have Jabulani Maluleke in the matchday squad and he might make a comeback in this crucial league encounter. Steve Komphela’s men are enduring a five-match winless run in the league while Rise And Shine head into this encounter off the back of two back-to-back defeats. I foresee a draw here.

Stellenbosch 28/10
Draw 2/1
Orlando Pirates 21/20
This is another Telkom Knockout Last 16 rematch as the Buccaneers managed to record a 1-0 victory over the PSL rookies. Rhulani Mokwena’s men created a lot of chances but failed to convert on numerous occasions while Steve Barker opted for a defensive approach and I expect this clash to unfold the same with Pirates being more clinical in front of goal. This is written Pirates win all over it.

Highlands Park 15/10
Draw 37/20
Chippa United 2/1
These are two sides with contrasting fortunes as Highlands Park are unbeaten in the league since the opening day defeat to Kaizer Chiefs and they lie in fifth position while Chippa United are rooted to the foot of the table. It remains to be seen how the midweek Telkom Knockout clash with Bloemfontein Celtic affects their plans for this game. Newly-appointed coach Norman Mapeza also must show what he’s made of and whether he will be able to satisfy the hard to please and trigger-happy Chippa Mpengesi. The hosts should triumph here.

Sunday 27 October

Mamelodi Sundowns 15/20
Draw 9/4
Kaizer Chiefs 4/1

Baroka 31/20
Draw 37/20
AmaZulu 2/1
Baroka’s time wasting tactics came back to bite them when they conceded an equalizer against SuperSport United a few seconds after the five minutes that was added on by the referee and they went on to lose the Telkom Knockout Last 16 clash on penalties. They’re currently enduring a three-match losing streak in the league and they play an AmaZulu team who are currently in the relegation zone and suffered a 5-0 clobbering at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout. I think this will end with a share of the spoils.

TREBLE @ 8/1
SuperSport Win 15/20
Orlando Pirates Win 21/20
Highlands Park Win 15/10
