International Racing: Happy Valley – Thursday 26 December 2019

Jockeys ride horses

It’s the day after Christmas and a perfect opportunity to take advantage of some competitive racing at the Happy Valley circuit.

The value on the card comes early, in the form of DIAMOND LEGEND in the opening event on the card. He is dropping in the ratings and with the 10-pound claiming Chan up, will be looking to take full advantage of these favourable handicapping conditions over this trip. The best bet on the card comes later on, in the 7th race. PICKEN is in good form and seems to have found the right sort of field. Drawn well, he should be a relatively safe bet. See more here.

Race 1 – 12:45 – Class 5 – 1200m (Turf)
Selections: 4 – 1 – 6 – 10 – 12
DIAMOND LEGEND is a class dropper having finished just off them in recent outings, against Class 4 opposition. He showed promising signs in his last start when coming from off the pace late to make good headway. The 10-pound claiming Chan jumps aboard the son of More Than Ready and if building on that latest run over this course and distance, he could present good value to kick off the meeting. BLOOMING SPIRIT finds an improved draw after his latest, which happened to be his second outing since dripping into this class. The blinkers helped in that run when dropping to this trip and with Moreira retaining the ride, he deserves plenty of respect. ROYAL CHOCOLATE has also had the two starts since dropping to this level and both outings having come after a three-month absence, so he will be cherry ripe for this run. He too has a decent record in this class and the slight rise in trip should suit. He has slipped to a competitive mark of 36 and with de Sousa retaining, he must be included. SHOW MISSION has also been slipping in the ratings and he is starting to look competitive. The son of Showcasing finished in front of the former last time, but he has a tougher draw to handle this time. With that said, he does have some decent form behind him and Grant van Niekerk will be looking to ride him cold from gate 10 and he will be expected to rally late.

Race 2 – 13:15 – Class 3 – 2200m (Turf)
Selections: 6 – 4 – 9 – 8 – 3
CLEMENT LEGEND steps back up to a trip where he has an impeccable record at this course. With three wins from his 4 attempts, he lands a useful draw for another bid for the winners’ box. Grant van Niekerk has picked up the one victory on him from his two engagements and he jumps back aboard the son of Ocean Park. He took a bump at a crucial stage last time out and if building on that effort, he looks tough to oppose here. TASHIDELEK finished just in front of the top selection last time, but he will be drawn a little deeper this time. He too has a decent record over this track and trip, with two second-place finishes from two attempts. Joao Moreira takes the mount on the son of Street Cry for the first time and despite the fact that he is still a maiden after 13 outings in Hong Kong, he has the form to feature prominently. JIMMU has been dropping in the ratings and he appeared to travel a lot better last time out when having the blinkers removed. A regular competitor over the mile, he steps up to unknown territory over this 11-furlong trip and if staying, he could go very close. CROWN AVENUE has gone close over this trip and he had very good form to his name, before finding traffic in his last two starts.  He would’ve found the 1650m a touch on the sharp side last time out and the son of Hard Spun should relish the step up in trip here. Chadwick takes the mount for the first time and he deserves inclusion.

Race 3 – 13:45 – Class 4 – 1650m
Selections: 3 – 1 – 8 – 4 – 2
WINNING ENDEAVOUR has dropped to a competitive mark and he showed good improvement last time out, over this course and distance. He finally lands a useful draw and the jockey booking of Moreira looks an attractive one. With the four starts behind him since his recent drop to this class, he is due a win and conditions look perfect for him here. PRETTY BAUHINIA has also slipped in the ratings and he showed good improvement last time out when having the blinkers fitted. With the two starts behind him, since dropping to this level, he gets the services of Karis Teetan who seems to get the best out of him (7:2-1-1). Drawn well, he is a regular campaigner over this course and distance and looks the biggest threat to the top one. SANGRIA has dropped 8-pounds in the ratings in his last five starts and he has been knocking on the door for a win, as a result. Drawn well, he gets the blinkers fitted for this slight drop in trip and Callan retains the ride. He will be switched off towards the back of the field and should relish the tempo over this reduced trip. LET’S TAKE IT EASY has shown promising signs since dropping into this class three starts back. He has dropped another 5-pounds in the ratings in that time and he looks well handicapped for a shout at the lions share of the prize money. Leung knows the son of Street Boss well and he must be included.

Race 4 – 14:15 – Class 4 – 1650m (Turf)
Selections: 2 – 11 – 6 – 9 – 7
CHARITY WINGS has found some useful form since returning this season. A regular campaigner over this course and distance, he has been knocking on the door in his last three starts. Grant van Niekerk knows him well enough, having jumped aboard the son of Bel Esprit on three prior occasions. He finds another favourable draw and looks the one to beat on current form. MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE has been dropping in the ratings and he is starting to look threatening off his current mark of 43. He certainly enjoyed stepping back up to this trip last time out, when also finding a plum draw and with Joao Moreira in the irons this time, the son of Sebring should be right there in the finish. ROYAL RACER gets the headgear removed and he will be looking to improve on that disappointing last start when failing to find cover around the turn. He has a wide draw to negate, but he gets the services of Zac Purton for this outing and on his prior form over this course and distance he must be included. SUPREME PLUS has slipped in the ratings and he is showing signs of an exit from his maiden status. He has only had the 10 starts so far and he should have a bit of scope for improvement. He steps up to this trip for the first time, but the son of Zicconi should stay and he is a worthy inclusion.

Race 5 – 14:45 – Class 4 – 1200m (Turf)
Selections: 10 – 11 – 2 – 5 – 9
MASTER ALBERT has been in solid recent form in recent times. With 10 starts over this course and distance, he has done everything but win and he appears to have found the right type of field to do just that. From gate 8, he will be settled just off the speed, but his priority will be to find early cover. Teetan has ridden him in his last five starts and he has a great opportunity to pick up another win here. SPEEDY MISSILE has his peak run after a rest and he will be looking to build on that decent last start when making his Happy Valley debut over this course and distance. He will strip a lot fitter here and Yeung takes the ride from a similar draw. With scope for improvement, he looks a major threat to the top one. VICTORY POWER is another contender who has a useful record to his name, despite not landing in the winner’s box yet. Beaten by just 0,5-lengths last time out, Badel retains the ride for his second outing on the son of Power. With his course and distance record in mind, he has every chance of picking up his first win here. NOBLE MAN is a well-bred son of Exceed and Excel, having his debut here. Moreira takes the mount and it will be worth following his movements on the betting boards, prior to this run.

Race 6 – 15:15 – Class 4 – 1000m (Turf)
Selections: 10 – 2 – 1 – 9 – 4
THE ABRAXAS went close to winning last time out when showing good improvement with the blinkers on. That was over the Sha Tin 1200m and he looks primed for this slightly shorter trip. Drawn well, he gets the services of Joao Moreira for the first time and if building on that latest effort, he looks the likely victor here. G UNIT followed up his debut win in his penultimate run with a solid effort over this course and distance last time. That was his second outing in a row over this track and trip and with a win and a third in his three attempts in this class, he is certainly not out of his depth. Grant van Niekerk is reunited with the son of Danerich and they deserve plenty of respect. BEST SMILE finished behind the former last time out, when stepping out for his third career outing. All three runs have come over this course and distance, in this class and he has landed in the 2nd box twice. He gets the hood removed this time, but Zac Purton sticks with the ride and if overcoming gate 8, he will go right into contention. AURORA STEED has slipped further in the ratings and he finds even more relief at the weights, with the 2-pound claiming Poon up. He will be looking for a smoother passage this time, after an interrupted trip last time, which cost him valuable lengths. His yard is in form and if overcoming gate 10, he will be right there.

Race 7 – 15:45 – Class 3 – 1650m (Turf)
Selections: 10 – 3 – 5 – 6 – 8
PICKEN has been in solid form since returning this season. He went close in his latest effort, which happened to be his first outing over this course and distance. Moreira jumps back aboard, having ridden him on 14 prior occasions for all three of his career wins. Drawn 1, he appears to be a strong selection for first prize. ARCADA is performing well off a competitive rating of late and he looks perfectly set up to make a big impression here, with this being his third start back this season. He has a good, consistent record over this course and distance and from a favourable draw once again he will be expected to fight out the finish. RACING LUCK has his third run after a rest after two good comeback runs over this course and distance. Despite the wide draw he will have to contend with, he will strip a much fitter horse for his peak run and with a bit of luck in running, he should be right there at the business end. CHARIZARD finished just in front of the 2nd selection in his latest outing when having his second run over this course and distance. Callan has a useful record on the son of Onemorenomore and from another favourable draw, he’ll be right there.

Race 8 – 16:15 – Class 2 – 1650m (Turf)
Selections: 5 – 11 – 8 – 1 – 10
SUPER OASIS had his local debut recently when finishing in 5th – just 2-lengths off the eventual winner. He picked up three wins abroad prior to that, so he should have big claims second up. Purton rode him on that debut effort and he retains the ride here, despite picking up a wider gate. He’ll strip a fitter horse now and with scope for more improvement, he will be the right horse to follow should he overcome the draw. BAND OF BROTHERS has been in solid recent form. He finished just off them in his penultimate start in this class and followed that up with a very good performance last time out, at Class 3 level. Both efforts came over the mile at Sha Tin and he was required to overcome wide gates in both. Back in Class 2 company, Karis Teetan takes the mount and from an improved draw, he must be included. THE HULK clearly enjoyed his first experience at the Happy Valley circuit last time, when going down a short-head in 2nd place at big odds. He overcame a tough draw on that occasion and the son of Spirit of Boom should relish this slightly reduced trip. Moreira jumps back aboard and with scope for further improvement, he must go in. HEZTHEONEFORUS has been finishing just off them in recent times and he looks well placed to make another big impression. Shinn retains the ride on the son of Sufficient and on his current form, he looks a big threat and must be included in wider perms.

Race 9 – 16:50 – Class 3 – 1200m (Turf)
Selections: 1 – 4 – 2 – 9 – 6
LE TERROIR was not disgraced last time out when overcoming a wide draw to finish under 2-lengths back from the winner. That was his third start since rising into this class, having won his first two attempts at this level and he lands a much-improved draw this time around. Moreira retains the ride and on his exceptionally good course and distance record, he looks hard to knock here. SNAP FIT is an unbeaten son of Nadeem, having landed three wins on the trot. He took the rise into this class last time out, in his stride and it is no surprise to see Zac Purton stick with him. He looks a progressive sort and from a useful draw, he must have a big shout here. SHINING ACE hasn’t missed the first three places for a while now, with two recent wins to add to the equation. He finished in front of the top selection last time out but lands himself a much tougher draw to negate here and that will make things a bit tougher. He likes this course and distance and Shinn appears to have struck up a nice relationship with the son of Testa Rossa. If overcoming the draw, he will be right there once again. WINNING METHOD attempted to go start to finish over the 1000m last time out and he was collared late by a very useful sprinter in the form of GENTLE BREEZE. He steps back up to a trip where he has placed in his only attempt so far and with a plum draw to launch his challenge from, he should have no trouble finding the run of the race and deserves plenty of respect.
