International Racing: Sha Tin Turf – Saturday 21 December 2019

Jockeys ride horses

The final weekend before Christmas presents a few nice opportunities for punters to pick up a bit of extra spending money.

With a few stand out bets on offer, LEAP OF FAITH should be worth following with a fair amount of confidence in the 4th race. He found betting support on debut and boxed on well despite jumping slow and with a clean break this time, he’ll be hard to pass. CHEFANO has been tipped on this platform a few times and he has proven costly to follow. With that said, he is going to relish the extra ground and from a good draw, he gets one more chance in the 9th race.

Race 1 – 06:15 – Class 5 – 1600m
Selections: 5 – 3 – 8 – 1 – 7
LIVERBIRD STAR has been slipping in the ratings for some time now and the blinkers seem to be working if his last two outings are anything to go by. He stayed on nicely in his latest start, when stepping out for the first time at Happy Valley and lands a plum draw for his return to the Sha Tin circuit. KC Leung jumps aboard having ridden him on 7 previous occasions and off his current rating, he must be in with a big shout. REGENCY GEM drops back to trip where he has placed in both attempts. From a much-improved draw this time, Zac Purton regains the ride and he will look to settle the son of Showcasing near the front. He is overdue his maiden win and if repeating his penultimate start, he will be right there at the business end. SOCCER MASTER has also slipped in the ratings and he is starting to show threatening signs off his reduced mark of 29. The blinkers seemed to help last time out and they will be fitted once again, along with the tongue tie this time. From a better draw, Joao Moreira jumps aboard and with this being his second outing for his new stable, he can show more and must be included. WIN WIN THIRTYTHREE finds a slightly better draw this time, after being forced wide from gate 11 last time out. That was just his second start since dropping into this class and he would’ve found the 1000m trip a touch short of his best. He steps up to the mile and if his penultimate start over 7-furlongs is anything to go by, he will relish the extra and must be included.

Race 2 – 06:45 – Class 4 – 1200m
Selections: 2 – 11 – 12 – 14 – 5
A tricky race to analyse, it’s a race peppered with debutantes and unexposed form. KA YING EXCELLENT is yet to find a decent draw, having been drawn wide in his first two starts and he lands another tough one here. He made late headway over the extra furlong last time out, having found strong betting support prior to the start and with more progression to come, he looks a threat here. Teetan retains the ride and with a bit of luck in running, he could land himself in the winners’ box. MOON PEAKS has also found little luck so far. Drawn wide in both starts, he has run into traffic and ended up finishing further back that he would’ve liked. From a much-improved draw this time, he has his first start for his new stable and Alex Lai takes the ride. The blinkers and tongue tie will be fitted again and the son of Choisir should have plenty more to come. He warrants inclusion. LUCKY GUY has also been a candidate for finding little luck in running and that trend continued last time out, when running into trouble at the 400m mark before he managed to rally late for a neck beating. From a plum draw this time, Callan retains the ride and he will be expected to go very close to winning. FORTUNE PATROL hasn’t been completely disgraced since stepping up to this class three runs back. The son of Rip Van Winkle has his second start for his new stable and this will also be his second start after a 5,5-month absence. He will strip a lot fitter here and despite landing the widest barrier, he is worth including.

Race 3 – 07:15 – Class 5 – 1200m
Selections: 1 – 8 – 12 – 13 – 14
KWAI CHUNG ELITE has slipped 3-pounds in the ratings in his last 3 starts and he looks well weighted for a big claim at the winners’ prize. Drawn well, he comes into this race off the back of two good efforts over the 6-furlongs and back at Sha Tin this time, he has the form to win here. CAPTAIN BOSS has also dropped to a competitive rating. He found favouritism in the betting last time out and he did well to finish just 1,75-lengths back, despite bleeding and suffering a cut leg. He drops back to the 1200m for his return and if bringing some of his recent form to the table, he looks a threat from a good draw. FIRE AND GOLD has found some useful form as he too has dropped to a competitive mark in the ratings. He is still a maiden after 18 attempts, but with the blinkers seemingly assisting him in his last two starts, he gets the services of Joao Moreira and he appears to be a major contender here. He finished right behind the top selection last time out and from a slightly improved draw, he’ll be right there. WHISTLE UP returns to the Sha Tin circuit on the back of some good recent form. He has slipped 8-points in his last five starts and the long-time maiden could make some headway here.

Race 4 – 07:45 – Class 4 – 1400m
Selections: 8 – 1 – 7 – 2 – 9
LEAP OF FAITH gave a very good account of himself on debut, over this course and distance. He found firm support in the betting markets and had it not been for a slow start, he may have finished closer than the 1,75-length defeat he suffered. From a slightly better draw this time, Moreira retains the ride and with the scope for improvement, he looks one of the better bets on the card. SUNSHINE WARRIOR has found two wide draws in his last two starts, but he has not been disgraced in either. The mile may have been a furlong too far for him last time and he should relish dropping back to the 1400m here. From a slightly improved draw, Teetan jumps back aboard having ridden him on four previous occasions and he looks well placed to feature prominently in a field like this. GOOD FOR YOU has been knocking on the door as he has slipped in the ratings of late. He will enjoy the step up to a trip where he has been well-performed previously and he lands a useful draw to mount his challenge from. From off the early speed, he will be running on strongly and must be included. KING’S TROOPER has been fancied in both of his last two starts and had it not been for the traffic he found in his latest effort; he may have obliged for his followers. Drawn wider this time, he has plenty of scope for improvement and he must have a shout.

Race 5 – 08:15 – Class 4 – 1200m
Selections: 1 – 2 – 4 – 8 – 3
Another tricky race, with little form to go on. FANTASY appears to be the one to side with, if his debut effort is anything to go on. He was backed into favouritism and duly delivered the goods with a powerful finish. That was over this course and distance and he will now line up with 8-pounds more to carry, after receiving a penalty for that win. With the scope for further improvement, he looks tough to beat. WAR LORD also won on debut and he had valid excuses in his follow up effort, when blood was discovered in his trachea, post-race. Both efforts have been over this course and distance and he lands an improved draw this time. Moreira retains the ride and he deserves another chance. POWER KING was just touched off on debut over this course and distance, when finishing just behind the top selection. He lands a much tougher draw this time, but he has scope for more and with Teetan in the irons, he cannot be discounted. METHANE makes his Sha Tin circuit debut after two solid performances at Happy Valley. He was caught out wide in his latest effort, when having barrier 10 to overcome and from a better draw this time, further improvement can be expected and he must be considered.

Race 6 – 08:50 – Class 4 – 1800m
Selections: 1 – 4 – 11 – 6 – 9
BLASTOISE went close to winning in his only start over this course and distance and his form since then has been solid. The son of Ambidexter is going to relish the extra ground and Purton jumps back aboard, having won on him in his penultimate start. From a mid-field draw, he rates the one to beat. LONDON HALL was caught wide from a tough draw last time out, when facing stronger opposition. That was over this course and distance and having dropped a further 2-pounds in the ratings since then, he looks a major contender from an improved draw. With a solid record over this course and distance, he must be included. DIONYSUS COLLIN has found some solid recent form in his last two starts, since stepping up in trip. Touched off in both starts, he returns to Sha Tin with Moreira retaining the ride. Drawn wider this time, he will be cherry ripe for this outing and will be looking to go one better here. ABOVE beat the former last time out, to land his second win in succession. He will line up 3-pounds worse off with the former on that effort and drawn wider this time, he will find things a lot tougher. With that said, his form is hard to knock and he deserves plenty of respect.

Race 7 – 09:20 – Class 3 – 1200m
Selections: 3 – 1 – 14 – 9 – 2
Yet another tough race to gauge, COMPUTER PATCH looks the likely winner in a field peppered with improvers. He overcame a wide draw on his local debut to box on well in the closing stages, for a second-place finish. That effort was over this course and distance and from a much better draw this time, Purton jumps aboard the son of Exceed and Excel and he’ll be tough to oppose. BEAUTY APPLAUSE has an impeccable record so far and he has continued delivering the goods as he has stepped up to this class, with two wins from three attempts. He loves this course and distance, having landed 4 wins from his 6 outings over the Sha Tin 1200m and despite the wide draw, he looks a big runner here. E STAR has slipped to a competitive rating and he has started to show signs of a big run of late. He has his third outing since stepping up to this class and having won twice over this course and distance from five attempts, he will relish the extra furlong after his last start. Drawn well, he must be included. ISLAND SHINE finished right behind the 2nd selection on debut and followed that up with a flat effort last time. With 2 wins and 4 seconds from his 8 career starts so far, he has plenty more to come and he will be out to make amends for that modest last effort.

Race 8 – 09:50 – Class 3 – 1000m
Selections: 10 – 4 – 9 – 6 – 5
LUCKY MORE was a seriously impressive winner at the second time of asking, when blitzing the field from start to finish. He ended up winning by over 4-lengths in that run and he clearly has plenty more to offer. He is drawn perfectly and with Zac Purton retaining the ride, he looks the one to beat. DUKE WAI attempts a hat-trick of wins, having won his latest when stepping up to this level. The blinkers have clearly worked and he will be ideally suited to the fast pace expected. Drawn well, Teetan retains the ride and he’s the main opposition to the top one. MASSIVE POCKET finished right behind the former last time and he will be looking to jump out on better terms this time, having taken a bump at the start in his latest. Drawn on the right side, he brings good form with him and he must be included. CLASSIC UNICORN had an incident filled run last time out, when attempting the hat-trick of wins. He was strongly fancied on that occasion and he will be looking to make amends here, with Moreira up. He has plenty of speed and if finding a smoother passage this time, he will be a lot closer and must go in.

Race 9 – 10:25 – Class 2 – 2000m
Selections: 11 – 5 – 13 – 6 – 4
CHEFANO has been given a few chances and he has been rather unlucky not to have picked up a victory in at least one of his four runs back this term. He finds a useful draw this time and looks set to relish this step up in trip to the 2000m. Joao Moreira makes for an attractive jockey booking and around the 3/1 mark, they should be good value to get the job done. HELENE LEADINGSTAR finished right behind the top selection last time, when having his peak run back this term. He is yet to win from his 11 starts in Hong Kong, but he should relish the extra ground here and from a plum draw, he is certainly not out of his league. Teetan takes the ride on the son of Wanted and if building on his recent form, he should be involved in the finish. HIGH REV gave a very good account of himself last time out, when stepping up to this league. That was on the back of two wins in a row, in Class 3 company and he looks set to make another big impression from a useful draw. He gets the services of the 2-pound claiming Poon and if seeing out the trip, he will be right there. TIANCHI MONSTER finished right behind the top two selections last time out, when having his peak run back. He has won twice from four attempts over this course and distance and as such, he will relish the step up to this trip. Drawn well, Chad Schofield takes the ride and he should be worth including.

Race 10 – 11:00 – Class 3 – 1400m
Selections: 8 – 7 – 2 – 3 – 6
SIMPLE ELEGANT rises in class on the back of some very handy form of late. He loves this course and distance, having landed 2 wins from 4 attempts and with his exceptional gate speed in mind, he should be able to negate the wide draw. From a handy position, he should be very tough to pass and the son of Pierro looks the likely winner here. ULTIMATE GLORY went close to winning when stepping back up to this class, after that impressive Class 4 victory in his penultimate start. Zac Purton reclaims the ride from a wide draw and he will be looking to make late headway from off the early speed. Purton has a good record on the son of Exceed and Excel, having won twice from his four engagements and with a bit of luck in running, he should go close. FOLLOW ME beat the former last time out, when taking full advantage of gate 1. He is drawn much wider this time and he will line up 3-pounds worse off with the former, which will add to the challenges he faces this time out. A three-time winner from just thirteen starts, he has more to come and must be included with Moreira retaining. GOOD BEAUTY returns to the Turf course after that modest All-Weather effort last time. He has won over this course and distance before and off his current rating, he looks competitive in a field like this one. From a handy draw, he will be near the front and his followers can expect to see him boxing on stoutly in the closing stages.
