Spanish La Liga: Gameweek 19 Preview

Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezman of Barcelona embrace

The Spanish La Liga returns from its two-week break and hits the halfway point with Matchday 19 which includes the Catalan derby between Espanyol and Barcelona at the RCDE Stadium. As usual in La Liga, there’s plenty of value to look forward to, so let’s get straight into it.

Friday 3 January

Real Valladolid 31/20
Draw 37/20
Leganes 22/10 (20:00)
Real Valladolid welcome Leganes to the Jose Zorrilla Stadium on Friday night. The White and Violets will be looking to make a winning start to the new year after a miserable end to 2018 which saw them go winless in their last six La Liga matches, suffering three defeats. Leganes, despite sitting 19th on the table, are unbeaten in their last three games, winning twice. Los Pepineros will be hoping to continue where they left off. Leganes have a fine record over Valladolid, having won each of the last five meetings. The visitors are well worth a punt at 22/10.

Sevilla 13/20
Draw 11/4
Athletic Bilbao 9/2 (22:00)
Sevilla are enjoying a strong campaign under the stewardship of former Real Madrid and Spain boss Julen Lopetegui. They are currently third in La Liga, just five points behind leaders Barcelona. The Andalusians will be confident of beating Bilbao on Friday night, having won each of their last five La Liga meetings at the Ramon Sanchez Pijuan against Gaizka Garitano's men. The home win is the way to go.

Saturday 4 January

Valencia 7/10
Draw 11/4
Eibar 4/1 (14:00)
Valencia face Eibar at the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday. Albert Celades' men are unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions, recording wins over Villarreal, Levante and Ajax, while drawing against Chelsea, Real Madrid and Real Valladolid. Los Che have turned the Mestalla into a fortress and will head into the game confident of victory. Eibar has had the upper hand in this fixture recently, but I fancy Valencia to come out on top.

Getafe 33/10
Draw 26/10
Real Madrid 8/10 (17:00)
Real Madrid travel to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Saturday where they take on Getafe. The hosts are very tough to beat at home, which explains the nice price on Madrid, but Zinedine Zidane's title-chasers should have enough quality to come away with all three points. Los Blancos are unbeaten in their last 10 La Liga meetings against Getafe, winning nine times. Back the visitors to oust their opponents.

Atletico Madrid 3/10
Draw 17/4
Levante 19/2 (19:30)
Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last four La Liga meetings against Levante, winning three times – keeping clean sheets in all three. I’m backing another victory for Atleti and a 10th clean sheet of the season for Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Take the Home To Win To Nil market at 9/10.

Espanyol 52/10
Draw 7/2
Barcelona 9/20 (22:00)
The final match on Saturday sees Barcelona take on Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium in the Catalan derby. Before the teams even kick-off, the Blaugrana hold the bragging rights as they are top of La Liga, while their local rivals are languishing at the foot of the table. The hosts have been dreadful this season and are winless in eight games, suffering six defeats. Barca completed the double over Espanyol last season, winning 2-0 at home and 4-0 away, with Lionel Messi netting a brace in each match. The away win is a banker at 4/10, but if you’re looking for more value, take Barca on the -1 Handicap at evens.

Sunday 5 January

Granada 9/10
Draw 23/10
Mallorca 32/10 (13:00)
The first game on Sunday is a battle between the promoted sides as Granada host Mallorca. The hosts are 11th in La Liga on 24 points, while the visitors are 17th, having collected just 15 points. Granada beat Mallorca 1-0 in their home fixture in the Segunda Division last season and I’m backing the Nazaries to repeat that feat.

Real Sociedad 19/20
Draw 26/10
Villarreal 26/10 (15:00)
Real Sociedad welcome Villarreal to the Reale Arena on Sunday. La Real sit in an impressive fifth place in the table, just one point behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid and three behind Sevilla in third. Imanol Alguacil's side will be aiming to keep within touching distance of the top four and will be confident of beating 10th-placed Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine have lost six of their nine games on the road this season. Back the home win.

Deportivo Alaves 31/20
Draw 43/20
Real Betis 37/20 (17:00)
Real Betis travel to the Mendizorroza on Sunday to take on Deportivo Alaves. The Babazorros, who sit 15th in La Liga, will be hoping to distance themselves further away from the relegation zone. They’re winless in their last four matches, suffering three defeats. Real Betis are 13th on the table and after a disappointing end to 2019 where they failed to beat Espanyol (2-2) and lost 2-1 at home to Atletico Madrid, they’ll be hoping to start the new year on a winning note. These sides cancelled each other out in both meetings last season and it looks like this could end in another draw.

Celta Vigo 21/20
Draw 47/20
Osasuna 26/10 (22:00)
Relegation battlers Celta Vigo host newly-promoted Osasuna in the final fixture of the round. The hosts managed to survive the drop last season, but things aren’t looking good for the Galician side at the moment as they languish in 18th position on the table. The Celestes will be desperate to start the new year on a positive note and Oscar Garcia Junyent will be hopeful his side can inflict Osasuna their third straight league defeat. I’m not so hopeful though. I’m going for the draw.

TREBLE @ 44/10
Sevilla Win 13/20
Valencia Win 13/20
Barcelona (-1) Handicap 1/1
