International Horse Racing Tips: Kranji Best Bets - 26 January 2020

Jockeys ride horses

It’s the Chinese New Year meeting in Singapore this Sunday 26th January 2020 and the race card itself will certainly live up to punters’ expectations.

The highlight on the card is the Gr3 Fortune Bowl, a 1400m conditions race which is peppered with class. Supported by the Macau Jockey Club Trophy Kranji Stakes at set weights, the two features are sure to add to an enthralling afternoon of quality racing.

Best Bet: AFALONHRO (Race 6)

As far as the jockey ranks are concerned, Vlad Duric (21.24%) and Ronald Woodworth (16.73%) are neck and neck this season with 41 winners apiece and they will both be looking to build on their current win tally. As far as the trainer’s ranks are concerned, Michael Clements (16.26%) is sitting on 33 wins and he is currently edging out Mark Walker (10.4%) by just two winners.

Looking at the first race on the card, it is a modest Class 5 event over 1100m on the Poly and HEART OF COURAGE appears to have landed on a competitive looking mark, which should pay his owners the lion’s share of the winners’ cheque very soon. The 5-year old son of Fastnet Rock has been knocking on the door in his last three starts and from another useful barrier he should get the better of this field.

Race 2 is a 6-furlong dash on the same surface, this time for Class 4 competitors and once again the top rating should be tough to beat. SIAM ROYAL ORCHARD has a tough draw to overcome, but that didn’t seem to deter his chances two starts back, when landing his 2nd career victory from gate 11, over the same course and distance. He is Group 1 tested and with plenty of scope for further improvement, he’ll be hard to peg back. YULONG GREEN should be the biggest danger, but he is still a maiden here and despite the weight advantage he might just have to settle for second.

The third race on the card takes us on to the Turf course for the first time on Sunday and MR ROCKWELL gets the nod for first prize. He lands a perfect draw and with the 2kg claiming apprentice Kok aboard the son of Fastnet Rock, he has a great opportunity to capitalise on his solid recent form at this level. HIDDEN PROMISE could be a big danger here. He lands another wide draw, but he was just touched off last time out when flashing home late and the extra furlong could suit him perfectly.

The value bet on the card comes in the next race, in the form of INHERIT and current champion jockey Vlad Duric claims the ride. He was a little unlucky last time out, when taking a bump at the start and then again at the 700m mark. From gate 12, he will be looking to go handy and if finding a bit of luck in running he should present some nice value for punters. RESTRAINED will be worth including as well, with this being just his 4th start and he will have plenty of scope to improve further. If ridden a bit more patiently this time, young South African jockey Ryan Munger should have a nice opportunity to make a good impression early on in his spell in Singapore.

We return to the Poly for the 5th race on the card, the second class 5 event over the 1100m and tipped for first is the Tan trained SPUR ME ON. The 7-year old son of Flying Spur has clearly enjoyed the recent drop in trip and from a perfect draw this time, he has a very good chance of picking up his 9th career win. Apprentice Kok retains the ride and he managed to get some significant improvement out of him last time. With 2kgs less to shoulder here, he looks tough to oppose.

The best bet of the afternoon comes in race 6, in the Windfall Stakes Novice – a race at set weights over 1200m. AFALONHRO is the top-rated contender who has shown up well in both of his starts so far. He showed an impressive turn of foot on debut over this course and distance and went to win his next outing over the same trip on the Poly. Woodworth takes the mount and from a reasonable draw he is worth following with a fair amount of confidence. BURAAQ is the biggest threat having been just touched off over this course and distance last time out. That was also in Novice company and with Moor retaining the ride he’ll need to be respected.

The supporting feature greets punters in the 7th race and it is a tricky affair to make sense of. VITTORIA PERFETTA has had a solid start to his career, having landed the 3 wins from just 8 outings and he has found some very useful form since returning from a rest three runs back, despite things not quite going to plan in his comeback run. The son of Zoustar has plenty more to offer and with Vlad Duric back in the irons, he looks a major contender and should be worth following. The best of the rest comes in the form of STAR JACK. He gave a very good account of himself at Gr3 level just three starts back and despite that being over further, he has the credentials to feature here.

ROCKET STAR has been the bridesmaid in 4 of his 6 starts here and he should be the one to side with in the 8th race on the card. The 3-year old son of Star Witness returns from a 77-day absence from the course, but he has faced stronger and if not too in need of this he provides a good opportunity for Duric to extend his lead in the race for the champion jockey title. ABSOLVIDO finished right behind a useful sort in his latest effort and he has clearly benefitted from the slight drop in ratings. He has a tricky draw to overcome, but with Michael Rodd retaining the ride he should be worth including.

The feature event on the card comes in the 9th race and it should be an absolute humdinger of a race. A Group 3 race over 1400m and its BOLD THRUSTER who gets the nod for the biggest prize of the afternoon. He gave a very good account of himself last time out, if one pays close attention to the stipes comment (“Fractious in the barrier, turned its head as the start was affected and stood flatfooted”) and if jumping on terms this time, he’ll be right there at the business end. The Singapore stalwart, COUNTOFMONTECHRISTO, is always one to consider at this level and he has deadly form over these sorts of trips. If overcoming barrier 11, it is hard to imagine him not throwing his hat into the ring and he deserves plenty of respect as always.

LIMITED EDITION is the one to be with in the final event on the card. The son of Perfectly Ready has enjoyed returning to the Poly surface in his last two starts and both of those runs have incidentally been over this trip and in this class. With Vlad Duric doing duty, he should good enough to win this despite the wide draw. If he fluffs his lines, it may be worth siding with the likes of WIND OF LIBERTY. He gave a solid account of himself when returning from a 5,5-month absence from racing last time and he clearly took a liking to the Poly. From a useful draw, he must be included.
