International Racing: Sha Tin Turf – Sunday 19 January 2020

Jockeys ride horses

We have an exciting ten race programme at Sha Tin on Sunday. The meeting includes two Group 1 races, The Stewards’ Cup and The Centenary Sprint Cup.

The best bet on the card comes in Race 3 with LEAP OF FAITH from the John Size stable. He has produced three solid efforts to date and will be looking for his first career victory under Zac Purton. In the next race, the value bet is DAILY BEAUTY from the Caspar Fownes stable. He produced an encouraging run on debut and Zac Purton will be doing duty once again. With the natural improvement that is expected, he looks to be the right one in the race. Trainer John Size has a host of nice runners on the day and he could bag a good few winners including both Group 1s.

Best Bet: LEAP OF FAITH (Race 3)

Race 1 – 06:15 – Class 4 – 2000m
Selections: 1 – 6 – 5 – 8 – 4
MAGNETISM stepped up in class last time and was far from disgraced. He ran on from some way back that day and despite his jockey dropping the whip, he managed to finish a creditable fourth. The son of Monsieur Bond drops back in class and gets the services of Zac Purton who is returning from suspension. From his midfield draw, he looks to be the one to side with here. ABOVE may have found the nine furlongs of his last race on the sharp side. He was a winner in his previous two starts over today’s distance and 2200m. Silvestre de Sousa who was aboard in his penultimate run steps back in the saddle and the pair pose a big threat to the top choice. VILLA FIONN has produced good consistent form. He has raced wide in his last two starts but rallied well in the home straight. Tony Piccone has done well in his short career in Hong Kong and the pair merit healthy respect. LONDON HALL has improved in his last two starts. He didn’t have the best of luck at the start last time but rallied well in the home straight. With a bit of luck in running and with Joao Moreira retaining the ride, he should be right there at the finish.

Race 2 – 06:45 – Class 4 – 1200m
Selections: 8 – 4 – 3 – 6 – 1
This is a very open Handicap and caution is advised. The narrow first selection goes to MOON PEAKS from the Manfred Man stable. He showed good improvement in his last start over this c&d. He was bumped at the start that day but kept on well at the business end. Alex Lai was aboard the son of Choisir last time and he will have a better idea of how to ride him today. SPARKLING STAR has produced two decent runs thus far. He didn’t have the best of trips in his last start, but if repeating his penultimate run he must have a decent say. Zac Purton does duty for the first time and the pair should pose a big threat to the top choice. POWER KING should have finished closer on the All-Weather last time. He didn’t have the best of trips in his penultimate run but boxed on well up the straight. If repeating his debut run which was over this c&d, he should be involved in the finish. UNDEFEATED didn’t get the best of starts on debut but boxed on well at the finish. He would have gained from the experience and should make the natural improvement.

Race 3 – 07:15 – Class 4 – 1600m
Selections: 1 – 3 – 6 – 5 – 8
LEAP OF FAITH is the best bet on the card. He should have won his last start but was crowded at the start and at the 150m mark. He races over the same distance today and with a bit of luck in running, he should be tough to beat. Zac Purton is in the saddle once again. CHEERFUL LEADER’S last three runs have been good. He had ease at a crucial stage in his last start, but boxed on well up the rail to finish a neck behind the winner. Joao Moreira is in the irons today and should the top rating fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces. TELECOM ROCKET raced from a handy position and took the lead at the 300m mark last time. He won by a neck that day and if repeating that run from a much better barrier position, he should be involved in the fight out for minor money. INVALUABLE showed good improvement in his last start, despite reported to be lame post-race. That race was over seven furlongs and the manner in which he finished off his race, suggests the extra furlong will suit him well. Vincent Ho does duty and the pair merit obvious inclusion.

Race 4 – 07:45 – Class 4 – 1400m
Selections: 4 – 1 – 12 – 11 – 7
DAILY BEAUTY is the value bet on the meeting. He produced an encouraging debut effort over six furlongs on this course. He was taken back that day and rallied well up the straight. He would have come on from the run and should make the natural improvement. The extra furlong that is on offer should suit him well and the son of All American may be hard to beat under Zac Purton. CIRCUIT THREE’S last three runs have been good. He made a late dash in his last start and just missed out. Karis Teetan was aboard the son of Savabeel in his penultimate run when winning over this c&d. Should the top rating fluff his lines, he could be the one to pick up the pieces. FANTASTIC SHOW has placed in his last three starts. He ran on well last time, but that was all a little too late. From his wide draw, he is likely to drop out once again and Joao Moreira will make him do his best work up the straight. VITAL SPRING has not finished too far off the winner in his last three starts. He received a bump at the start last time but rallied well up the straight. With a bit of luck in running, he should be involved at the finish.

Race 5 – 08:15 – Group 1 The Stewards’ Cup – 1600m
Selections: 3 – 1 – 5 – 6 – 7
The Stewards’ Cup looks to be an exciting race as we see BEAUTY GENERATION and WAIKUKU renew their rivalry once again. The latter gets the nod as he has finished in front of the former in their last three meetings. The son of Harbour Watch was running on well over this c&d last time and only finished half a length behind Admire Mars. He was an impressive winner in his penultimate start over the same c&d. Joao Moreira has a good record about the 5yo gelding with five wins, four seconds and a third-place finish from twelve outings. BEAUTY GENERATION has finished third in his last three starts. He moved up well in his last start before being caught in the final furlong. He is held by the top selection, but is very classy and cannot be ignored. If bouncing back to his best, he should pose as a big threat to the top choice. FURORE should have finished closer last time as he was blocked hampered at the 400m and found no running room at the 300m mark. With a bit of luck in running, he should be involved in the fight out for the minor placings. CITRON SPIRIT finished behind the top and second selection in his last two starts and may have to settle for minor money today. Silvestre de Sousa steps aboard the son of Invincible Spirit for the first time and he could make a big difference.

Race 6 – 08:50 – Class 3 – 1200m
Selections: 2 – 4 – 8 – 6 – 5
SHINING GEM is not the most consistent sort, but the manner in which he won his last start was very encouraging. He was crowded at the 900m mark and hampered at the three furlongs, but took the lead in the last 50m and won by over two lengths. Silvestre de Sousa does duty once again and with a bit of luck in running, he can notch up a quick double. LOCKHEED’S last three starts were encouraging. He had excuses coming into the home straight last time but kept on well at the business end. Joao Moreira rides from pole position and the pair pose a big threat to the top selection. SUPER FAST makes his Hong Kong debut after winning his first start in Ireland. The slight concern for this son of Es Que Love is his wide barrier position, but he gets the services of top jockey Zac Purton and if fit and well, he should be right there in the run down to the wire. GOOD BEAUTY showed good signs of a form return last time. He was crowned at the 400m mark last time, but the manner in which he finished his race off was encouraging. From his wide barrier, Grant van Niekerk is likely to race his from off the pace and let him do his best work up the straight.

Race 7 – 09:20 – Group 1 The Centenary Cup – 1200m
Selections: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5
BEAT THE CLOCK could notch up a double of Group 1 wins for trainer John Size and jockey Joao Moreira. The son of Hinchinbrook rallied well to win his last start which was also a Group 1. His record over this distance is excellent with six wins, two seconds and four third-place finishes from as many outings. Moreira knows him very well and the pair are yet to be unplaced from 21 runs together. His stable companion HOT KING PRAWN could pose as the biggest danger. He finished a neck behind the top choice under Karis Teetan last time and if repeating that run, he should be involved in the finish once again. MR STUNNING showed good signs of a form return last time when finishing 0.75 lengths behind the top choice. He raced from a handy position that day and stayed on well at the finish. Hugh Bowman does duty once again and the pair could earn another cheque. FULL OF BEAUTY is another runner from the John Size stable. He should have finished closer to his stable companions last time, but didn’t get the best of breaks and was blocked for running room between the 400m mark and the 300m mark. Zac Purton is in the irons for the first time and the pair should finish in the money.

Race 8 – 09:55 – Class 3 – 1400m
Selections: 9 – 11 – 7 – 2 – 6
This is another open and competitive race on the cards. The tentative first selection goes to AMAZING KIWI from the Douglas Whyte stable with Karis Teetan in the irons. He raced from a handy position last time but did it the hard way racing three-wide. The manner in which he stayed on at the finish was encouraging. The son of Helmet tries the extra furlong which should be right up his alley. From pole position, he could be the one to side with here. BEAUTY LOYAL’S last two runs have been very good. Was unlucky not to have won his last start over this c&d. He was eased in the running but rallied well from the 300m mark. His wide draw of 13 is a slight concern, but he gets the services of world-class Joao Moreira and the pair merit healthy respect. THE ROCK is making his Hong Kong debut after having four runs in the UK. He was an easy winner of his last start over a mile. The son of Dutch Art is nominated for the Hong Kong Derby and must be included in all bets. MONGOLIAN KING showed good improvement in his last start over this c&d. If repeating that run, he should be right there in the run down to the line.

Race 9 – 10:30 – Class 2 – 1200m
Selections: 8 – 10 – 11 – 4 – 6
BEAUTY APPLAUSE is in top form. He had every chance of winning his last start but just missed. The son of Stratum takes a step up in class today, but he looks to have some class about him. His record is very good with four wins and a second-place finish from eight outings. Joao Moreira knows him well and the pair merit healthy respect. COMPUTER PATCH was an impressive winner in his last start when getting the better of the top choice. He is worse off at the weights today, but there may be more to come from the son of Exceed And Excel. Silvestre de Sousa rides from pole position and the pair must be included in all bets. DUKE WAI has been an impressive winner in his last three starts. The step up to the six furlongs is no concern for him as he has won once and finish second once from three attempts. He is unbeaten under Karis Teetan and will be looking to keep that record intact. WATER DIVINER has not finished too far off the winner in his last three starts. He should have finished closer last time, but he made a mess of the start and was hampered at the 50m mark. With a bit of luck in running, he should be involved at the finish.

Race 10 – 11:05 – Class 3 – 1600m
Selections: 1 – 2 – 7 – 13 – 11
CHARITY GO was a surprise winner in his last start over this c&d. He was taken back that day, but took off in the final furlong. Tony Piccone was aboard that day and retains the ride. If repeating that run, he should hard to beat. SMART PATCH was his own worst enemy last time as he hung out in the final furlong. Zac Purton retains the ride and the pair should pose a big threat to the top choice. EVERYONE’S JOY showed good signs of a form return in his last start over seven furlongs on this course. The manner in which he finished off the race suggests that the mile will suit him well today. Joao Moreira rides for the first time and if overcoming the wide draw, he could be right there. SUCH A HAPPINESS ran on well when finishing fourth last time out. He has a much better draw and if repeating his penultimate run over this c&d, he can earn another cheque.
