International Racing: Sha Tin (Turf / All Weather) – Sunday 5 January 2020

Jockeys ride horses

Back at Sha Tin for the second time this year and it’s a 10-race affair, with a few interesting contenders to follow throughout the meeting.

CHEFANO has been costly to follow in recent times, but considering that he has finally landed a useful draw, he is worth another look and gets the nod as the best bet on the card. HAPPY WIN WIN lands the tag as the value bet on the card. He has dropped to a competitive rating and on his current form, he could find the winners box in an open race 6. See more here.

Race 1 – 06:15 – Class 4 – 1000m (Turf) – Yu Ping Handicap
Selections: 8 – 14 – 10 – 5 – 7
WILD WEST WING rallied well over the final furlong on debut when making good progress late. That was at Happy Valley and he now makes his course debut down the Sha Tin straight course. One concern is that he will be forced to track over from gate 1, but with the expected natural improvement to come, he looks tough to oppose here. PRAWN YEAH YEAH finished right behind the top selection last time when overcoming a wide draw and he finds himself a much better barrier for his first outing down the straight at Sha Tin. Despite the fact that he has less scope for improvement than the former with this being his 13th outing, he has found some useful form and deserves respect. TREASURE QUEST found traffic in his last start when showing some improvement on his debut effort. The blinkers seemed to have helped and he enjoyed racing up with the early speed. As such, the drop to the minimum trip should suit and with improvement to come, he looks a likely place prospect. EIGHT TRIGRAMS took a bit of a hold in his last start and his effort predictably faded out tamely over the final furlong. He reverts to the 1000m trip this time and having finished in second place in 3 of his 8 career outings, he certainly deserves some attention. The blinkers go on this time and the increased tempo should help him settle. He’s another that should give a good account of himself over this shorter trip and he deserves inclusion.

Race 2 – 06:45 – Class 5 – 1200m (All-Weather) – Ventris Handicap
Selections: 7 – 2 – 1 – 3 – 4
LA BOMBA has dropped further in the ratings since dropping into this class four starts back. He has started to show promising signs in his last few starts and he now tries the All-Weather surface for the first time. The son of Time Thief gets the services of the inform Teetan to do duty in the irons and from a much better draw here, he is worth following. MR MAGELLAN has also found some solid form since dropping into this lesser class, having finished third in all three outings. Two of those efforts were on this surface and he lands a plum draw this time, with de Sousa up. He is still a maiden after 13-starts, but he looks threatening off his current mark of 40 and on form alone, he must go in. EXCEL DELIGHT has been right there in his last two starts, since slipping into this class. The son of Exceed and Excel has also been on a downward trajectory as far as his rating is concerned and with Moreira retaining the ride, he should be right there again. NICE FANDANGO is a class dropper after struggling to get going at Class 4 level. He now returns to a division where he is unbeaten in two starts, but he has a tricky draw to overcome in his bid to maintain that record. The 3-pound claiming Wong retains the ride and if finding a smooth passage through, he should go into contention.

Race 3 – 07:15 – Class 3 – 1000m (Turf) – Sunning Handicap
Selections: 4 – 8 – 1 – 10 – 7
BALTIC WHISPER returns to Sha Tin after two useful efforts over this trip at Happy Valley. He finished right behind a useful sort last time out when boxing on well from a tough draw. Having dropped in the ratings, he appears to have landed on a very competitive mark of 71 now and with Grant van Niekerk doing duty he should be the one to beat. UTOPIA LIFE showed plenty of speed last time out when returning to the Turf after a solid campaign on the All-Weather. He had a tough trip which resulted in him being caught 100m out and with this being down the straight, he should be able to get closer to the front with a bit more ease. Purton jumps aboard the son of Wicked Style and he must be included. CALIFORNIA ARCHER continues to slip in the ratings and he gets the added benefit of acquiring the services of the 10-pound claiming Chan this time. He has just returned to this class and he will be looking to take advantage of that light galloping weight, from a mid-field draw. He has shown some improvement in each of his last four starts, since returning this term and with his fair course and distance record in mind, he can feature on best form. GOKO has been knocking on the door for some time, continuing his useful record over this course and distance. He is drawn on the right side of the course and also retains the services of the 3-pound claiming Mo, who seemed to get more out of him last time. If building on that effort, he should be right there.

Race 4 – 07:45 – Class 5 – 1400m (Turf) – Sun Wui Handicap
Selections: 10 – 1 – 7 – 2 – 5
SEIZE THE SPIRIT gave a solid account of himself last time out, when returning for his first run this term. Recent winner Lyle Hewitson picked up the ride for the first time and he seemed to get more out of the son of Mastercraftsman. He looks very competitive off his current mark of 33 and from a similar draw, he looks a major threat here. SHINEALOT has also dropped in the ratings on the back of a few luckless outings in his last few starts. He now enters this weaker class for this first time in his career and he will be looking to build on that latest run when rallying late for just a 1.75-length defeat. From a wider draw he will be looking to run on late and with a bit more luck in running this time, he should go right into contention. SUPREME WITNESS finished right behind the top selection last time out, when having his peak run back this season and he certainly improved from that plum draw. He is drawn out wide again this time, but Moreira looks to be an attractive jockey booking on the son of Stryker and if negating the draw, he’ll settle close to the front and should be right there at the business end. THE FULL BLOOM struggled from that wide barrier last time out and he finds a better draw this time, for his second outing since dropping back into this class. He is a three-time winner from five outings at this level and he seemingly enjoys this course and distance. Zac Purton picks up the ride for the third time and having won both of his previous engagements on this son of Zebedee, he must be considered once again.

Race 5 – 08:15 – Class 4 – 1200m (All-Weather) – Link Handicap
Selections: 3 – 2 – 1 – 9 – 5
FORTUNE HAPPINESS is unbeaten since having the blinkers fitted three starts back. He has been penalised as far as his rating is concerned, but gets the services of the 10-pound claiming Chan who has barrier 1 on his side. He has a very good record over this course and distance and he’s won twice from eight starts in this class. The son of Starspangledbanner is clearly in a good place right now and must be included. WILL POWER was a winner on debut when overcoming a wide barrier to box on gamely to win. He finds an identical draw for his return to the same course and distance here and the son of Power still has plenty of scope for more. Teetan retains the ride and they look the main danger to the top one. DOLLAR REWARD finished right behind the former last time when returning to the All-Weather surface after a decent effort on Turf prior to that. He enjoyed going handy in that run and Zac Purton will more than likely be looking to employ the same tactics here. Drawn a little wider this time, he should have the gate speed to get over and with a bit of luck in running, he should be right there. STAR SUPERIOR finished right behind the top selection last time out, on the back of a solid attempt in his penultimate start. He returns to the same course and distance now and lands a plum draw. Apprentice Wong retains the ride with his 3-pound claim and if building on those last two efforts, he will be right there.

Race 6 – 08:50 – Class 4 – 1800m (Turf) – Leighton Handicap
Selections: 5 – 12 – 3 – 2 – 4
HAPPY WIN WIN has dropped in the ratings and appears to be enjoying the recent step up to the mile. He now tries an extra 200m and the son of Zoffany should relish it. He finished strongly from off the pace in his latest effort and a repeat of that run should bring him right into winning contention. CHEERFUL STAR has also slipped in the ratings and he has given a good account of himself in his last few outings. Despite the fact that he has had a number of winless efforts over this trip, he has gone close on a few occasions and with Zac Purton up this time, he’ll be involved in the finish once again. LONDON HALL went close to winning last time out when dropping back into this class. That was over this course and distance, where he has picked up two wins and two places from five attempts. Both of those victories came in this class of opposition and despite the fact that he has picked up a tough draw here, he’ll be running on strongly under Moreira. AMAZING SATCHMO has also been dropping in the ratings and he gave his most promising effort last time out when finishing right behind the top selection. He steps up to the 1800m now, where he has only had one attempt so far and there may be a few question marks over him staying the trip. With that said, he is worth including on current form over the mile.

Race 7 – 09:20 – Class 3 – 1200m (All-Weather) – Hoi Ping Handicap
Selections: 10 – 6 – 3 – 2 – 1
MEGA HEART has been in solid form since returning to the All-Weather surface in his last three starts. All three runs came over this course and distance culminating in a very good performance from a wide draw, last time out. His form implies that he is close to winning, so from a good draw with van Niekerk up, he’s going to be the one to beat. REGENCY BO BO enjoyed switching to this surface last time out, after almost winning in his penultimate start on Turf. That last run was only his second run on this surface, his first over this track and trip and he showed an impressive turn of foot to flash home late. The increased tempo clearly suited him and from a useful barrier, he looks big threat here. RED DESERT came from well off the pace last time out, to miss by just a neck, that was from a wide draw over the same trip and he should just about find the run of the race this time, from a much-improved draw. He has only had the one run on the All-Weather when missing by a short head. Moreira takes the mount this time and he’s a big threat. ENCORE BOY finished just behind the second selection last time out when continuing his good consistent recent form over this course and distance. From a similar draw this time, de Sousa retains the ride and he too will be right there at the business end.

Race 8 – 09:50 – Class 3 – 1400m (Turf) – The Po Leung Kuk Cup (Handicap)
Selections: 6 – 2 – 8 – 4 – 3
MONICA has continued his solid run of form since rising into this class three starts back. He is a consistent performer over this course and distance, having picked up all three of his Hong Kong victories over this track and trip. Moreira takes the mount on the son of Murtajil and he lines up a full 6-pounds better off at the weights with the conqueror of his last start (STAR OF YUEN LONG) and with that in mind, he looks tough to oppose. NOBLE STEED is a class dropper here. He has been finishing just off them of late and he will relish returning to a division where he has picked up 2-wins and 4-seconds from his 10 attempts. Zac Purton jumps aboard, having won on his only other previous engagement on the son of Street Cry and from a much-improved draw he looks a big threat. BIG FORTUNE has also been in good recent form since rising into this class. He steps up to a trip where he has gone close to winning before and he will be looking to utilise his gate speed from barrier 9, in order to find a relatively handy position for this slight step up in trip. Teetan retains the ride and on his prior form, he must go in. LAKESHORE EAGLE has put in three useful efforts since returning this term. He finished behind the top selection last time out and now lines up 1-pound better off with the latter this time. From an improved draw, Leung retains the ride and they will be worth including for minor money.

Race 9 – 10:25 – Class 2 – 1800m (Turf) – Caroline Hill Handicap
Selections: 3 – 5 – 12 – 9 – 4
CHEFANO has been a costly horse to follow in his last few starts, having found hard-luck stories in all of his last three efforts. With that said, he has given a solid account of himself in both of his last two outings since stepping into this class and the return to 1800m will result in a slightly increased tempo that should suit. He finally lands a useful draw and if allowed to settle just off the early speed, he should have too strong a finish for the rest of them. SUPER OASIS is a three-time winner from ten outings, having his third start in Hong Kong. He hasn’t disgraced himself in his two starts on the island and the experience would’ve helped. With scope for more improvement, he should make a big impression with van Niekerk up and if overcoming the draw, he’ll go close. AMAZING BEATS arrived here under similar circumstances as the former, having picked up the same number of wins before making the journey north. He finds a tough draw to overcome this time, but if flashing home like he did last time out he will be closing in fast and could upset over the extra furlong. ENRICHMENT is 4-pounds better off at the weights with the top selection, on their last meeting. He was not disgraced when overcoming another wide draw and his chances will be boosted this time, having landed a much-improved draw. Lyle Hewitson jumps aboard the son of Teofilo and he’ll be worth including.

Race 10 – 11:00 – Class 2 – 1400m (Turf) – Broadwood Handicap
Selections: 10 – 1 – 3 – 6 – 2
HAPPY FUN has given a solid account of himself since rising into this class two starts back. The son of Darci Brahma did particularly well to box on for just a 2,25-length defeat last time when overcoming a tough draw over this course and distance. He lands a plum draw this time and gets the services of Grant van Niekerk who knows him well, having won and placed second on him in two engagements. If building on his current form, he looks tough to oppose. DECRYPT ran on nicely on his local debut when being forced wide initially. He lands a similar draw this time and his followers will be given confidence with Zac Purton retaining the ride. He has picked up two wins and is yet to miss the first three from his five course appearances so far. With more improvement to come, he looks a threat. BEAUTY LEGACY has his first start here and he brings with him, a useful record. He has a tricky draw to overcome first up, but Moreira takes the mount and his followers will be advised to pay close attention to the betting in order to get a gauge on his readiness. MR CROISSANT has been in very good form this season and the speedy son of Darci Brahma now steps up to the 1400 for the first time. He is ideally drawn here and if seeing out the trip, he has the class to be involved in the finish and must be included.
