HSBC World Sevens Series: Vegas Sevens

The HSBC World Sevens Series returns after a month of inertia. Darry Worthington previews all the action below.

The World Sevens Series heads for American shores this coming weekend. New Zealand sit top of the pops on the Series ladder 10 points clear of South Africa. Chinks may be showing in the Kiwis armour, however, as they struggled in Australia and were only able to grab a fifth-place finish.

France 14/1
Australia 20/1

Contenders

New Zealand
2019 Finish: Third
Pool D: Wales, England, and Spain

The New Zealanders head into this one off the back of their worst showing this season. Sydney has never been too kind to them and it was a similar case this year as they finished in a lowly fifth position. This was a massive disappointment considering they came into the tournament having finished no lower than second in the previous three legs.

The series leaders have only won two tournaments held in the United States with their last victory coming way back in 2008. They did, however, manage to claim third place at last year's edition.

South Africa
2019 Finish: Joint Seventh
Pool B: Ireland, Canada, and Kenya

The Blitzboks will be eager to close the gap between them and the log-leading Kiwis when they turn out at the Vegas Sevens.

The South Africans have a great record out in the States and have won the most tournaments (four) with their most recent win coming back in 2017.

Neil Powell's men also head into this one in decent touch having finished as runners-up in Sydney after going down to Fiji in the final.

Fiji
2019 Finish: Sixth
Pool A: France, Argentina, and South Korea

The Fijians finally showed some form during the last leg where they claimed victory out in Sydney. This was a far better showing from the Pacific Islanders who have endured a very sluggish start to the campaign.

Their record in the States isn't the most impressive with the Flying Fijians only winning two Las Vegas events, with their most recent victory coming back in 2016. They had a less than impressive campaign out in Vegas last season finishing the tournament in sixth place.

United States
2019 Finish: Winners
Pool D: Samoa, Scotland and Australia

The States will be looking to make it a hat-trick of victories on home soil when they take to the Sam Boyd Stadium this Saturday.

Like Fiji, the Americans have endured a tough start to the Series but they will take a lot of heart out of their third-place finish in Sydney.

A challenging pool awaits the host nation with all three of their opponents, and in particular Austria, sure to give them a massive run for their money. Should they win all their games, however, then the Americans will be in with a great chance of sealing yet another Vegas title.

Verdict: United States 33/10
I'm going to go for a massive speculator here and back the hosts. They have won the last two editions of this tournament and head into off a third-place finish at the Sydney Sevens.
