Second ODI: New Zealand vs India Preview

New Zealand vs India Preview

New Zealand recovered that winning feeling in the first ODI in Hamilton and can seal a series victory over India at Eden Park.

The Black Caps lost both T20Is played at the venue not so long ago, but their ODI squad features different personnel who appear to have refreshed the group.

Second ODI | Saturday 8 February 2020 | Eden Park, Auckland | 04:00

To Win
New Zealand 31/20
Tie 35/1
India 52/100

New Zealand
Tom Latham stepped in for Kane Williamson as skipper in the first ODI and will lead the Black Caps again at Eden Park. Latham also struck a half-century supporting the man of the match Ross Taylor.

Taylor produced one of the more memorable knocks of his tremendous career, and the Black Caps would certainly like it if he could fire again.

New Zealand's bowlers took a bit of a pasting from India's top order because of a failure to settle on a good line and length, they bowled too short with the new ball and gave the tourists a flying start. Eden Park is one of the more unforgiving venues for bowlers who stray in length.

The short straight boundaries at the ground will ensure both sides have to show greater discipline with the ball in hand or else we could be in for another high-scoring affair.

India
Virat Kohli's India lacked intensity in the field against the Black Caps in the first ODI and missed out on opportunities to put the hosts under pressure during the chase.

Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the rest of the tour with a calf strain.

They will be reasonably happy with their batting especially the form of Shreyas Iyer, who scored his maiden ODI ton at Seddon Park, and Lokesh Rahul.

India didn't look up to the pace while fielding in the series opener and were fined for a slow over-rate, though Kohli himself could not be accused of lacking intensity.

Under Kohli, India have been very good at responding to defeat with improved performance, and there should be an immediate improvement from this team.

Verdict: India
Kohli's charges will want to make amends for their first ODI slip-ups.
