International Racing: Thursday 23 April 2020 – Newcastle

A very competitive eight-race programme is scheduled for Werribee on Friday. SODALAY who is in Race 2 is the best bet on today’s card. She has produced two very good runs to date. She doesn’t meet the strongest field this afternoon and should shed her maiden tag.

Race 1
YULONG WALL won his maiden race at the fifth time of asking over 2455m. He raced from a handy position, took over the lead at the 150m and edged clear to the line. He does take on stronger opposition today, but he is lightly raced and looks to have more to come. If seeing out the extra distance on offer, he should be the one they all have to beat. HARVARD has come well in his last two starts. He settled well back last time, ran on up the straight and fought hard all the way to the finishing post. It must be noted that jockey Bradley Thomas-Rantall has a 100%-win strike rate for this trainer. Should the top selection fluff his lines, the son of Shocking may be the one to pick up the pieces.

Race 2
SODALAY is a filly taking on the males. She has produced two very good runs thus far, the latest of which was over this distance. She cast a shoe in her last start, which may not have helped her cause. The daughter of So You Think looks to have a bit of class about her and should take a power of beating in this line-up. SANDY TOES showed very good improvement in her last start over 1450m. She set the pace in that race and was outrun in the closing stages. If able to confirm her recent improvement, she should be one of the leading contenders for the placings.

Race 3
ACCELERANT’S last three starts after returning from a 21-week lay-off have been good. He set the pace in his last start, fought hard but went down by just a short head at the wire. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He has finished second once and third once from as many outings over this distance. Brett Pebble rides for the first time and the combination should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. CHRYSLA has shown very good improvement in her last two starts after a 34-week break. She stayed on well at the finish in her last outing and will enjoy the extra furlong on offer this afternoon. She is having her peak run and should be cherry-ripe for this race.

Race 4
DUE DELEGANCE is the value bet on today’s card. She has fair recent form to her credit, but the run that catches the eye is when she finished second over six furlongs at Launceston on 18 January. Should the daughter of Reward For Effort find the form of that race, she could be the one to cause the biggest upset. OLIVE produced a very good comeback run over this distance at Kilmore last time. She moved up very well at the 200m mark, but just ran out of puff in the closing stages. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She should strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and has a very good chance of going one better.

Race 5
KURNELL was an impressive winner of his maiden race over this distance at Cranbourne last time. He has won once and finished third twice from as many outings over this trip. He does take a rise in class today, but he is lightly raced and looks to be progressive. It is encouraging that jockey Michael Dee does duty aboard the son of Kaphero. MY BOY NICK won his maiden race at the tenth time of asking over this distance last time. He raced from a handy position that day, took over the lead at the 200m mark and was geared down for the victory. He does take on stronger this afternoon, but his last success may have given him the confidence he needs and there may be more to come.

Race 6
This is a competitive contest and caution is advised. The narrow first selection goes to TAVISOCKS from the Luke Oliver yard. He produced some very good form before being given a lengthy 64-week break. He gets the services of a 3kg claiming apprentice this afternoon and if not in need of this outing, he may be the one they all have to beat. ACHIEVE VICTORY produced a very good comeback run when finishing fourth over six furlongs and he has placed in his only attempt over today’s distance. The son of Anacheeva should strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and with Michael Dee in the saddle, he has a good chance of winning this.

Race 7
THINK ABOUT ME was an impressive maiden winner in his last start over a mile. He was returning from a 22-week break that day, which makes the win that much more encouraging. The manner in which he won suggests that he should have no issues with the rise in distance this afternoon. Brett Pebble takes the ride and the pair should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. SIRIUS DEAL’S last two starts have been good, the latest of which was over this distance. He raced from a handy position last time and stayed on well at the business end of the race. The son of Dundeel should be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.

Race 8
YATTA IZU is one of the better bets on today’s programme. She has finished in the top three placings in her last five starts. She is yet to be unplaced on this course with a record of a second and two third place finishes. Brian Park retains the ride this afternoon and she may get rewarded for consistency here. ATAME is much better than her last start suggests. She runs well over this distance having won once, finished second once and third once from four attempts. Jockey Brett Pebble has a decent 22%-win strike rate for this trainer and on best form shown, she should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.
