International Racing: Monday 20 April 2020 – Mornington

International Racing: Happy Valley – Wednesday 15 April 2020

A small but competitive eight race programme is scheduled for Mornington on Monday. The best bet comes in Race 4 in the form of ZAKURAK. His last three starts have been good and he meets a very weak field this afternoon. He should take a power of beating.

Race 1
BEACHGOER has finished third in both his runs to date, the latest of which was over this type of distance. He settled mid-field that day and chased solidly to the line. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He doesn’t meet the strongest of opposition today and should be very hard to beat. ACROPOLIS HILL is not the most consistent sort. He was his own worst enemy last time as he hung in the straight, but it must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. If repeating his penultimate run when finishing third over a mile at Stony Creek, he could be one of the leading contenders for the placings.

Race 2
MASTER POET is the value bet on today’s card. He produced very good form before given a lengthy 34-week break. He is a very versatile sort who has done well over various different distances. If settling off the speed and if not in need of the run, he may be the one they all have to beat. STERLING ACHEEVA got back to winning ways over this course and distance in his last start. He chased hard that day and got up where it matters most. It is encouraging that jockey Clayton Douglas retains the ride aboard the son of Anacheeva and the pair should be the ones to throw out the biggest challenge to the top choice.

Race 3
KALKARNI ROYALE is an unraced daughter of Nicconi from the Kevin Corstens stable. She has produced two decent barrier trials coming into this race and gets the services of Dwayne Dunn who has a 33%-win strike rate with this trainer. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to her chances. ANNABETH has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. She has finished second twice from three attempts over this distance and gets the services of a 4kg claiming apprentice this afternoon. Should the top selection fluff her lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.

Race 4
ZAKURAK is the best bet on today’s programme and he looks very tough to beat. He has just been beaten in his last three starts over this distance. He showed good speed when setting the pace in his last start, but was caught in the shadow of the post. Will Price retains the ride and the pair should be hard to peg back in the closing stages of this race. REBUTTAL was a tad disappointing in his last start after producing a promising debut effort over this distance. It is encouraging that jockey Jye McNeil takes the ride aboard the son of Reward For Effort and the pair should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.

Race 5
ART MAJOR produced a fair debut effort when finishing fifth over this course and distance on debut. He was in need of that outing as he understandably raced very green. The son of Artie Schiller would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, he should be one of the leading contenders in this field. MAGIC AMERICAIN produced a fair debut effort over nine furlongs. He was given a 28-week break since that outing, during which time he would have strengthened up. With the natural progression that is expected and if fit and well, he should throw out a big challenge to the top choice.

Race 6
COURT DEEP is lightly raced and has very good form to his name. He raced from a handy position in his last start and stayed on well all the way to the line. He makes his course and distance debut this afternoon and if suited to the track, he should be the one they all have to beat. BIG DARRYL has very good consistent formlines to his credit. He has finished second twice from three attempts over this distance. If able to contend with the widest barrier position, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.

Race 7
ARISTOBEAUX got back to winning ways in his last start over this course and distance. The manner in which he won last time was encouraging as he raced four wide around the turn and still managed to give a very good kick up the straight. Ben Allen knows the son of Toorak Toff well and the pair should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. MISS GENEVA is a filly taking on the boys. She produced some fair form prior to her 22-week break. Having won once, finished second once and third once from four starts over this distance, the daughter of Delago Deluxe makes her stable debut this afternoon and if settled in to her new surroundings, she may pose the biggest threat to the top choice.

Race 8
MOI CHOUX didn’t have much luck in running when returning from a 16-week break last time. He raced wide throughout and never found a kick up the straight. An impressive winner in his first two starts, he should strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and he gets the services of a 4kg claiming apprentice. He’ll be the one to side with here. BLACK OPAL got back to winning ways over 1100m at Werribee in his last start. He has won once and finished third once from five attempts over this distance. He is having his first run on this course this afternoon and if suited to the track, he’ll be right there in the run down to the wire.
