A competitive eight-race programme is scheduled for Ascot on Wednesday. The best bet comes in Race 3 in the form of IRRITABLE RODNEE. He finished runner-up on debut and with the natural improvement that is expected, he should be tough to beat.

Race 1
AMELIA’S CONTRAIRE was given a well-deserved break after winning her last start over six furlongs on this course. She has done well this season with a record of two wins and a third-place finish from four starts. She should be at peak fitness for her return to racing as she was a barrier trial winner recently. William Pike does duty this afternoon and the pair should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. SUN POWER was a tad disappointing in his last start and he was given a break, which may have been what he was looking for. He has had a decent barrier trial coming into this race so fitness shouldn’t be a concern. Jason Brown knows the son of Snippetson well and the pair merit healthy respect.

Race 2
ALTANI was a tad disappointing in her last start after winning her penultimate run over six furlongs on this course. She has won two of four outings on this course and won her only attempt over this distance. William Pike does duty aboard the daughter of Universal Ruler and the pair should be tough to beat. CLOAK AND DAGGER has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. He raced three wide without cover in his last start, moved up well, but was outrun late. It must be noted that three horses from that formline have come out and won since. Lisa Staples is back in the saddle today and the pair merit obvious inclusion.

Race 3
IRRITABLE RODNEE produced a promising debut effort when finishing runner-up over seven furlongs at Pinjarra. He stayed on well at the finish that day which will suggest that he will enjoy the extra distance on offer today. He would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, he should go one better. I HOPE YOU DANCE is a filly taking on the boys. She has not finished too far off the winner this season and has notched up three seconds and two third place finishes from eight outings this season. Should the top choice fluff his lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.

Race 4
ERISTIC was a surprise winner in his last start over 1100m on this course. He lost some ground on the turn, but sprinted hard up the straight and drew clear for the victory. If repeating that effort today, he should have a good chance of notching up a quick double. DANI BELLA produced a very good return to racing last time after 54 weeks off the track. The drop to the minimum trip should not pose an issue as she has placed over the distance in the past. The daughter of Smug should strip a much fitter horse today and she should throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.

Race 5
THE ROAN RANGER is still a maiden after eleven outings, but he has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. He should have won last time, but had to switch across heels at the 200m mark and finished off his race strongly. He should have no problems with the extra distance on offer today and may be the one to side with here. PETTICOAT JUNCTION’S last two starts have been good. She didn’t have the clearest of passages in her last outing and should have won that day. She tries the distance for the first time which should not pose an issue and with a bit of luck in running, should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.

Race 6
HE’S ALL MIGHTY is lightly raced and just won his maiden over a similar distance at Pinjarra. He does take on stronger company this afternoon, but he looks to have plenty of scope about him. William Pike and Adam Durrant have struck up a good partnership together. The son of Al Maher is likely to race on the speed and may be hard to peg back in the closing stages. FAIREDU produced a very good comeback run after 31 weeks off the track. She runs well over this distance with a record of a win, a second and a third-place finish from as many attempts. From pole position, she may be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.

Race 7
This is an open contest and caution is advised. MELROS BEACH is the narrow first selection and is much better than her last start suggests. She produced a very good penultimate run when finishing runner-up over six furlongs at Pinjarra. If repeating that run today, she may be the one to cause the upset here. FUEL THE FRIAR shed her maiden tag in her last start over a similar distance at Pinjarra. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She does take on stronger opposition today, but she is lightly raced and looks progressive. She is likely to race from off the pace and do her best work up the straight.

Race 8
NORDIC KING stayed on at the finish in his last start over this distance at Pinjarra. Jockey William Pike has struck up a decent partnership with the son of Magnus having recorded two wins and two second place finishes from eight outings. He is drawn in pole position today and looks to be the one to side with here. SENTIMENTAL FRIEND has fair recent form to his name. He steps back up to the mile with Mitchell Pateman retaining the ride. He is having his peak run and should be cherry-ripe. From his good draw of three, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.
