International Racing: Royal Randwick - Saturday 23 May 2020

An exciting nine-race programme is on the cards at Belmont on Saturday. The best bet on the day is CHARLETON EDDIE who takes his place in Race 2. The two-year old gelding has won his last three starts impressively. He looks classy and with regular pilot Patrick Carbery in the saddle, he should take a power of beating.

Race 1
I HOPE YOU DANCE is still a maiden after 15 outings, but she has not finished too far off the winner in recent races. She moved up well to challenge in her last start over seven furlongs, but was overhauled in the closing stages. She has finished second in both her attempts over this distance. William Pike knows the daughter of Trade Fair well and the combination should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. HIP WIGGLE has produced three good runs since returning from a 21-week break. She tries the mile for the first time and the manner in which she races, suggests that the extra distance should be right up her alley. Chris Parnham has ridden the daughter of Universal Ruler twice for two second place finishes and the pair merit healthy respect.

Race 2
CHARLETON EDDIE is the best bet on this afternoon’s programme. He was ultra-impressive when winning his last start over six furlongs at Ascot. He set the pace that day, gave a good kick at the top of the straight and cruised clear for the victory. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. Regular pilot Patrick Carbery does duty once again and the pair should notch up four wins in a row. MISS IVY LEAGUE is a filly taking on the males. She notched up her first career victory over six furlongs at Ascot last time. She gets the winkers fitted for the first time and if these have the desired effect, she should be right there in the run down to the wire. Kyra Yuill knows her well which is a big plus.

Race 3
RESORTMAN is unbeaten from two starts to date. He was returning from a 17-week break when winning over six furlongs at Ascot last time. He tries the extra furlong this afternoon, but his breeding suggests that he will be suited to the extra distance on offer. Kyra Yuill who was aboard in both his victories, rides once again and the combination should remain unbeaten this afternoon. STELLA DOOR is a filly taking on the males and she has won her last two starts well over six furlongs. It must be noted that the form of her last race has been franked. Jockey William Pike has ridden her three times for two wins and a second-place finish from as many starts. If seeing out the extra distance on offer here, she should be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.

Race 4
RED ARMY is the value bet on today’s card. He was a tad disappointing in his last start over nine furlongs at Ascot, but is much better than that effort. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. The son of Patronize has won three times, finished second once and third three times from as many starts on this course. He has struck up a good partnership with jockey William Pike and the combination should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure today. UTGARD LOKI has good consistent form lines to his credit. He has won three times, finished second three times and third once from nine starts this season. Lucy Warwick knows the son of Frost Giant well and the pair merit obvious inclusion.

Race 5
This is a wide-open contest and there are a few horses with a decent chance of winning. Caution is advised and the narrow first choice is PICTURE PERFECT. He was unlucky not to have finished closer to the winner in his last start as he didn’t have the clearest of passages up the straight. It must be noted that two horses from that form line have come out and won since. Jockey William Pike has struck up a good 34%-win strike rate for this trainer. With a bit of luck in running, he should be the one they all have to beat. PETTICOAT JUNCTION is a winner of her last two starts over eleven furlongs at Ascot. The manner in which she ran on at the finish last time was encouraging. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. Natasha Faithfull knows her well and the combination have a decent of notching up the hat-trick today.

Race 6
SHOWMANSHIP is a lightly raced four-year old who has had just the two starts to date. He won well on debut and followed that up with a decent fourth-place finish over this course and distance. He returns from a lengthy 47-week break this afternoon, during which time he would have strengthened up. He should have no concerns with regards to fitness as he produced a decent barrier trial coming into this race. William Pike keeps the ride and the pair should take a power of beating. PLATINUM BULLET is a filly taking on the males and she has produced three good efforts since returning from a 22-week break. She has won once and finished second once from as many starts over this course and distance. Joseph Azzopardi is yet to be unplaced aboard the daughter of Shooting To Win and the pair merit healthy respect.

Race 7
BLACK DUCATI has only finished out of the money once from eight career outings thus far. She has won once and finished second twice on this course from as many outings, plus she has also won once and finished second once from as many attempts over this distance. She is having her peak run this afternoon and should come into this race cherry-ripe. Regular pilot Chris Parnham does duty once again and the combination should be hard to beat. MASSIMO could be the first male past the winning post. He has produced two good runs since returning from a 19-week lay-off. He gets the services of William Pike who has won three times and finished second on him twice from six starts. Should the top selection fluff her lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.

Race 8
POWER OF ST GEORGE is a winner of two of his last three starts. He settled in a mid-field position last time and caught the eye when running on strongly up the straight to notch up the victory. Paul Harvey who has ridden him three times for two wins and a second-place finish from as many starts steps back into the saddle today. With a bit of luck in running from his wide draw, he may be the one they all have to beat. PASTRY has produced two good runs since returning from a 25-week break. She is having a decent season thus far having won once, finishing second twice and third once from six starts. William Pike does duty aboard the daughter of Gingerbread Man for the first time and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of her where it matters most.

Race 9
SLICED BREAD is not the most consistent sort, but his last start over seven furlongs at Ascot was good. The manner in which he ran on in the closing stages that day was encouraging. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He has a good record over this distance having won twice from three attempts. Brad Parnham has a good record aboard the son of Smug and the pair should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. RESISTANCE has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. She has won twice and finished third three times from fourteen starts on this course. She gets the services of a 3kg claiming apprentice this afternoon which should help her cause. She is drawn in pole position and cannot be ignored.
