International Racing: Cairns - Thursday 28 May 2020

International Racing: Wednesday 20 May 2020 – Sunshine Coast

A thrilling, competitive eight-race programme is scheduled for Cairns on Thursday with more soft underfoot conditions predicted. The best bet is REFUTATION in Race 2. He finished runner-up on debut at long-odds and will come on from the experience. He looks likely to escape the maidens this afternoon.

Best Bet: REFUTATION (Race 2)

Value Bet: MAKARIOS (Race 8)

Race 1
DIVINE MELODY had some fair form before the break and will benefit from a 3kgs apprentice allowance in this contest. She doesn’t meet the strongest field this afternoon. SHE BEATS THE BEST was not far off in her last two starts and looks the biggest threat to the top selection. NORTHERN GREAT is better than his last two starts suggest and interestingly, the winkers get removed.

Race 2
REFUTATION caught the eye on debut at long-odds and should take a power of beating in this contest. NICHOLAS ADAM is coming along the right way and looks the biggest danger to the top selection. MARVELOUS HEART is held by the top two selections but can run into the places of this event.

Race 3
SAXOPHONE won his last start on this track when just managing to fight off the challenge of the chestnut BUXTON. There is not much between them in the weights and the pair could fight out the finish again. HARD YAGA has shown some versatility, winning three times this season and all on different tracks. He needs to be respected in this contest.

Race 4
AKILEOS has won twice this season and been ultra-consistent throughout. He looks the one to beat in a very competitive Handicap. SUPER MARIO hasn’t been far off the winner since his last victory and should be right there at the business end. ARTHUR PORITT has placed three times this season at Cairns and can run into the places again.

Race 5
Three of HOT SHOT HARRY’S six career wins have come on this track and he possibly needed his last start after a layoff. VOLTAIC prefers the going on-top but can still feature in these soft underfoot conditions and must be respected. OUR ALICIA’S LANE won her last start at Townsville and it is encouraging that Krysten Swaffer retains the ride.

Race 6
LABRUSCO is returning from a 19 week break and he could just pull of the hat-trick of wins this afternoon, with a 1.5kgs apprentice allowing assisting his cause. BUOYANCY likes to race up with the speed in his races and he enjoys a bit of cut in the ground. He looks the biggest danger to the top selection. CAFFE ROMANO had some consistent form before the layoff and can run into the places again.

Race 7
RIGEL has his first run out of the maidens and he looks like he should progress through the handicap divisions. Chris Whiteley retains the ride and the pair can notch up a double. His owners also have BET ON LOVE in the race. She won on this track last time out and the form has worked out well. A line should possibly be put through CUPID SON’S last run as he is much better than that effort.

Race 8
The Sharlee D’Avila stable hold a strong hand in this event with NARDA SHAR and the New Zealand bred MAKARIOS. Riding engagements suggest that the former is the stable elect but the stable companion should be up to the task at hand and she represents each-way value. SPEED EIGHT jumps from a neat draw and has been consistent in the places this season. FOXY FELINE shoulders just 52kgs and she can upset with a light weight.
