International Racing: Royal Randwick - Saturday 23 May 2020

An intriguing nine-race programme is scheduled for Flemington on Saturday. The best bet is GAMEKEEPER in Race 5. He went on to notch up the hat-trick last time and despite shouldering top weight in this contest, he looks a massive runner.

Race 1
STARCASTER disappointed last time out in heavy going but if reproducing his penultimate effort when a winner at Geelong, he should have a big chance in this contest. SHEPHERD has dealt well with pressure in the past and relishes the tag of being favourite, he won on a heavy track at Ballarat last time out and looks capable. YONKERS has won 3 out of 5 starts this season and also won well on a soft track at Royal Randwick last time out.

Race 2
This is a very open race for juveniles and some caution is advised. KHOEKHOE is in search of the hat-trick and despite shouldering top weight looks hard to oppose on form. IMMORTAL LOVE made an impressive debut and has the scope to keep his unbeaten record intact. INDICTMENT disappointed last time when he finished mid field, but showed promise in his 2 prior runs and must be respected.

Race 3
TUBBY TWO TRACKS has her first run on this course and although she was beaten by BARBIES FOX in her last outing, she wasn’t disgraced.  She was only beaten just under 3 lengths and should strip a much fitter filly for this contest. BARBIE’S FOX is likely to settle off the pace and she receives a 3kg apprentice allowance, which could help her notch up another victory. DEBT N DEFICIT won just 7 days ago on this track and will be no concern about her race fitness.

LONROCK placed last start at Terang on a soft track when fresh and expected to settle off the speed, well placed. SHOWBAG drops 1kg from last run and likely to race off the speed, could threaten. KALLESKE has two placings from seven runs this prep and drops in weight, each-way claims. CHAPARRAL BELLE resumes after a spell of 24 weeks and ran fifth at Terang when last first-up, sneaky chance.LONROCK placed last start at Terang on a soft track when fresh and expected to settle off the speed, well placed. ALPHA ORO impressed last time when he went start finish and is in search of the hat-trick this afternoon. The New Zealand Bred has struck up a phenominal partnership with Ben Melham and it must be noted that a horse she beat in her last outing has come out to win since. SAGARRA tends to go well in wet conditions and has won twice this season, he could be the biggest threat to the top selection.  EL QUESTRO hasn’t run since August of last year when he pulled up lame but that formline has worked out well with four horses having won since.

Race 5
GAMEKEEPER is going for four wins in a row and looks the class package in this race despite having to shoulder top weight. HEZAFOX won his last start, gets a 1,5kg apprentice claim and interestingly tries blinkers for the first time this afternoon. TRANSLATOR impressed in his handicap debut when he gallantly hit the front at the 150m mark and it was race over. He disappointed in a Grade 1 on this track but has seemed to come along a lot since then.

Race 6
MILWAUKEE should get across from his wide draw without using up too much energy, he has won 4 times at Flemington and this seems to be his favourite hunting ground. HAUNTED carries a more suitable mass and has not disappointed favourite backers in the past. The New Zealand bred ROMANCER  has his first start this year but showed consistent form before the layoff and can run into the places.

Race 7
AUSSIE NUGGET has won and placed twice this season, his only disappointment was in April when he finished just out of the money at Sandown. DUKE OF PLUMPTON has run well in heavy conditions before and his recent formline looks attractive where he finished runner up. Since then, two horses have come out to win. ARCTIC SHOCK has performed well in her last four runs and she could give the males a good run for their money.

Race 8
SHOT OF IRISH is the value bet on the card he is in search of a hat-trick and will be aided by a 2kgs apprentice allowance. SO SI BON has won twice in heavy conditions and although he may prefer racing at Caulfield, he can challenge the top selection. DOUBLE YOU TEE didn’t shape in his first start this year but if recapturing the form he portrayed in 2019, he can run into the places.

Race 9
MOCKERY set the pace in a race last time out at Sandown and kicked clear in the latter stages to go on to win by just under three lengths and if repeating that effort she will be a tough filly to beat. ALBURQ has finished runner up in his last two starts and gets on well with apprentice Michael Poy, he looks like the biggest threat to the top selection.  HILO has won on this course and has been ultra - consistent in the placings this season. He should be respected despite shouldering top weight.
