International Racing: Werribee – Thursday 7 May 2020

An open looking nine-race programme is scheduled for Werribee on Thursday. The best bet on the card is RIGHT YOU ARE who runs in Race 7. He was an impressive maiden winner in his last start and returns from a well deserved 21-week break, during which time he would have strengthened up. If fit and well, he should take a power of beating.

Race 1
MIDSHIPS had excuses when finishing fifth in his last start after producing a promising debut when finishing second. He was reported to have had blood in the one nostril when returning to the parade ring after his latest outing. The son of Atlante clearly has some ability and with Daniel Stackhouse retaining the ride, he should be the one they all have to beat. SUMMER LOVER is a filly taking on the males. She ran a very good race in her last start over the minimum trip when returning from a 12-week break. Ben Melham takes the ride and he has a decent 22%-win strike rate for this trainer. The daughter of Reward For Effort should strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and should be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top choice.

Race 2
This is a weak and open Maiden event and caution is advised. The narrow first selection is LAUGHING STOCK who produced a fair debut when finishing just over six lengths behind the winner over this distance at Sale. The manner in which he stayed on at the finish that day was encouraging. The son of Tavistock returns from a 19-week break, during which time he would have strengthened up. With the natural improvement that is expected, he may be the one to side with here. CATCHA SPARK ran a good race in his last start before given a 13-week break. The manner in which he moved up that day was eye-catching. If not in need of the run this afternoon, he may be right there in the run down to the finishing post.

Race 3
BLUE OCEAN showed good improvement in his last start when finishing third over seven furlongs at Pakenham. He raced from a handy position that day and stayed on well at the business end of the race. The manner in which he finished off his race last time suggests that he will enjoy the rise to the mile and there may be more to come from the son of Ocean Park. SPILIA is still a maiden after sixteen runs, but he ran a good race in his last start over this distance at Kilmore. He is having his peak run this afternoon and should be cherry-ripe. His wide draw should not pose much of an issue as he is likely to use his early gate speed and get across onto the rail without using up too much energy.

Race 4
TAKE STOCK is the value bet on today’s programme. He took on stronger opposition in his last start over a similar distance at Cranbourne. He has won once and finished second twice from three attempts over today’s trip. He drops back in class today and gets the services of a 2kg claiming apprentice who has finished second aboard him in the past. His wide draw is no concern as he likes to race up with the speed and he should use his early gate speed to get across without using up too much energy. UPSWING got back to winning ways in his last start over a mile at Terang. He was returning from a 32-week break that day which makes the victory that much more encouraging. Billy Egan knows him well and the pair should pose a big threat to the top choice.

Race 5
STEINBRENNER has decent recent form to his credit. He finished a creditable third in his last start over 1732m at Sale. It must be noted that two horses from that form line have come out and won since. He tries the course and distance for the first time and if suited to the track, he should notch up his third career victory. FLORIDA DREAM was an impressive winner in his last start over this distance under today’s apprentice Jaden Lloyd. The son of Sebring is having a good season thus far having won three times and finishing second once from eight starts. He is drawn in pole position and should the top selection fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.

Race 6
FLAG EDITION was an impressive winner of her last start over this distance at Pakenham. She settled well back in the field that day and ran on strongly before charging clear in the final 50m of the race. The daughter of Raise The Flag is unbeaten from two starts over this distance and has a very good chance of keeping that record intact today. SODALAY caught the eye when winning her maiden at the third time of asking over this course and distance in her last start. The daughter of So You Think takes on stronger opposition today, but she is lightly raced and looks to be a progressive sort. Daniel Stackhouse does duty this afternoon and the pair should pose a threat to the top selection.

Race 7
RIGHT YOU ARE was an impressive maiden winner over 1500m in his last start at Sandown. He has been given a well-deserved 21-week break since that outing, during which time he would have strengthened up. He takes a rise in class this afternoon, but the manner in which he won suggests that he has some class about him. It is encouraging that Damien Oliver takes the ride as he has a decent 20%-win strike rate for this trainer. SIGN OF USSURI produced a good comeback run when finishing third over ten furlongs at Sandown, four weeks ago. It must be noted that four horses from that form line have come out and won since. The drop in distance is no concern as he has finished third in his only attempt over the trip in the past. Michael Dee takes the ride and the pair merit healthy respect.

Race 8
This is an open contest and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is REWARD WITH RETURN from the Nathan Hobson stable. The six-year-old gelding got back to winning ways in fine style over this trip at Bendigo last time. He has won twice, finished second twice and third twice from fifteen attempts over this trip. 2kg claiming apprentice Madison Lloyd knows him well and the pair may find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. CAN’TFORGETYOU was in need of his comeback run over this distance at Bendigo last time. He finished 3.5 lengths behind the top selection that day and as they meet on the same weight terms, he may have to settle for the same result. However, he should strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and has a good chance of finishing a lot closer.

Race 9
LOMBARDO is one of the better bets on today’s programme. He was an impressive winner on debut over this distance at Bendigo. He was given a short 10-week lay-off after that outing, during which time he would have strengthened up. The son of I Am Invincible takes on stronger company this afternoon, but the manner in which he won suggests that he has class about him. Michael Dee takes the ride and the pair should take a power of beating. THAT’S A BLAST is a filly taking on the males. She caught the eye when winning on debut over this course and distance. She didn’t have much luck in running that day and the manner in which she won was encouraging. Should the top choice fluff his lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.
