Gulfstream Park Best Bets

Race 5 (Claiming): No7 - MR DISCRETIONARY
Trainer: Jayne Cibelli - Jockey: Edgard Zayas

This barn fires two at the money owing to the temporary closure of Monmouth, but even though he’s returning from a break, MR DISCRETIONARY is preferred to The Mighty Judge. Cibelli feels the selection needed to get his batteries recharged after shipping to FLA prior to the winter but now has him popping his corks for a rewarding campaign. The Mighty Judge is no slouch either and fields his own claims after landing a restricted claimer here at the end of last month. Projected is another name to conjure with, as the Showcasing gelding opened his account for 2020 on third run back at Tampa earlier in the month. With advancing age he’s taken longer to get fit, but proved that day he’s right in the zone.

Prediction: 7-8-9

Race 8 (Claiming): No1 - VERDICT IS IN
Trainer: Bobby Dibona - Jockey: Miguel Vazquez

Vazquez looks a significant booking for VERDICT IS IN, who debuts for this barn off the claim. His third against $16,000 open claimers is solid enough for his new task at the $12,000 level. Mystical Moon moves up the distance ladder following a narrow loss over a mile last time. He could prove more of a threat than Sir Seamus, who wired his penultimate outing against two-lifetime claimers but then faded in a better race when favourite.

Prediction: 1-6-10

Race 10 (Allowance Optional Claiming): No5 - COOP TRIES HARDER
Trainer: Jane Cibelli - Jockey: Miguel Vasquez

Part of an uncoupled entry, COOP TRIES HARDER is sure to enjoy the ferocious pace likely to be set by Pay Any Price, Fully Loaded, Frenchmen Street, and Sturgeon. Since returning from a six-month break he’s put in two solid efforts in defeat and lost no caste in failing by just a neck to overhaul eight times Gulfstream sprint scorer Tiger Blood last time. He was then forced three-wide when third to Maniacal. While he can’t avoid to again shut his eyes when the gates open, he is going to be a huge danger to the pacesetters if breaking more cleanly. Pay Any Price has a terrific record at this track and may break free of the other speedballs. Those aforementioned foes could easily cut their own throats, leaving Coop Tries Harder to swoop to conquer late in the stretch.

Prediction: 5-9-4

Race 11 (Allowance Optional Claiming): No3 - GHOSTLY BEAUTY
Trainer: Mike Maker - Jockey: Joe Bravo

For consistency alone GHOSTLY BEAUTY deserves considerable respect and is going to deliver sooner than later. She always gives her best which makes her a fair bet to gain a first success for Maker, on fourth start for that trainer. She’s been a twice beaten favourite at 6-4 and 11-10 and needs to show that those losses represent money that’s merely lent. Sun Summers is on the comeback trail on a first run since June last year when she finished runner-up in a $50,000 starter allowance at Belmont. She’s trained encouragingly at Palm Meadows, but her fitness has to be taken on trust. Yolanda’s Pride drops a peg on the class ladder and is there to be shot at for her leading connections, but should nevertheless have a big say.

Prediction: 3-4-9
