Race 5 (Emirates Poule D’Assai Des Poulson’s) (Group 1)

Andre Fabre is responsible for a third of the nine-strong field for the French 2,000 Guineas and appears hell-bent on ensuring there is a strong pace for his champion two-year-old and ante post favourite VICTOR LUDORUM. Alson and Arapaho join that Shamardal colt and have claims in their own right, the issue being whether Victor Ludorum, a Group 1 winner at two, has derived sufficient physical and mental improvement from his underwhelming comeback in a Group 3 trial at Longchamp three weeks ago. Alson debuts for Fabre after landing a Group 1 in the Bois de Boulogne last October and has to be respected. Arapaho took out a Listed race at the same track a couple of weeks ago to give hope that he can win this for his Coolmore connections. Ecrivain ran well in his trial and has chances of turning the tables on his conqueror, The Summit.

Prediction: 1st VICTOR LUDORUM 2nd Arapaho 3rd Ecrivain 4th The Summit 5th Alson

Race 6 (Emirates Poule D’Essai Des Pouliches) (Group 1)

TROPBEAU has the points on the board courtesy of her half length defeat of Dream And Do in a Longchamp Group 3, since when she’s had three weeks to prepare for her big early season objective. The Showcasing filly was a dual Group scorer at the Festival here last summer, and it’s therefore surely to her advantage to have seen this 1,000 Guineas moved to her favourite hunting ground. Mickael Barzalona is the only jockey to have ridden her, and will fancy his chances of outpointing the unbeaten Simeen. This Aga Khan-owned filly is following an upward curve but is nevertheless stepping up in class under Christophe Soumillon. Dream And Do has champion jockey Maxime Guyon doing the navigating and could get closer to Tropbeau with the benefit of that run. A third Fabre contender, Tickle Me Green, has three quarters of a length to find with Tropbeau and looks sure to be involved.

Prediction: 1st TROPBEAU 2nd Simeen, 3rd Dream And Do, 4th Tickle Me Green

Newcastle Best Bets

Race 4: No2 ART POWER
Trainer: Tim Easterby - Jockey: Silvestre de Sousa

The King Power-owned ART POWER has a similar profile to chief rival Magical Journey but on the face of encouraging reports from Malton I expect him to trump that rival. The son of Dark Angel ran well in defeat on his introduction here before bolting up in better company at York. Don’t worry that he’s back competing at a sprint trip.........he should take that in his stride and he promises to be good. Definitely, one to follow.

Race 8: No11 ALIGNAK
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute - Jockey: Oisin Murphy

Sea The Moon colt ALIGNAK progressed in a parsimonious three-year-old campaign to trouble the judge on all three outings, culminating in a success over a mile and a quarter on the Kempton Polytrack. This is a compressed handicap, but he does receive weight from all but one of his 11 rivals and should enjoy the track. He’s done plenty of work and importantly looks to have more potential than anything else in the field.

Race 9: No9 THIBAAN
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute - Jockey: Jim Crowley

While he will provide a line onto some others from this powerful yard THIBAAN may be good enough to take this out on only his second career start. He didn’t know what to do on debut at Kempton but looks to have learned something, and he’s bred to enjoy the step up to a mile and a quarter.

Race 10: No7 VALYRIAN STREET (Nap)
Trainer: Roger Varian - Jockey: David Egan

Based on what he’s shown in his work at home it will take a good one to stop the blue-blooded VALYRIAN STREET from delivering on his debut. His king’s ransom yearling price of €600,000 gives him plenty to live up to, but the son of Frankel has done everything very easily in his preparation. Furthermore, Varian is a dab hand at getting one ready meaning there should be no excuses.
