Mgijimi was Like a Brother to me: Pirates Superfan

A Pirates fan who was usually seen side by side with Mgijimi is still shocked by the sudden passing of her friend.

Two women looking excitedly at cellphone

Just like Mandla “Mgijimi” Sindane, Ayanda Masuku is another ever present supporter in Orlando Pirates games and their mutual love for the Buccaneers brought them closer to each other.

Ayanda says she had been talking to Mgijimi the night before the morning of his untimely death and when she saw the news on social media, she thought it must have been an accident.

“I just couldn’t believe it because we had been chatting the previous night and he never mentioned anything about not feeling well. I had to call his cellphone and his brother regrettably confirmed the tragic news”.

Recounting the good times, they had together, Ayanda who is based in Durban says their friendship dates back to 2014.

“We met at an Orlando Pirates game and we’ve been friends ever since. We would call each other before big games to meet outside the stadium and sit together during games”

“Mgijimi was never grumpy, he was always friendly and joyful. Despite gaining a celebrity status he never let fame get to his head as he greeted everyone and afforded every fan who wished to take pictures with him that opportunity.

“We will really miss him and Orlando Stadium will never be the same. The last time I saw him was at Sugar Ray Xulu as he came down to Durban for Pirates’ last game before lockdown”.
