There's a bit of Top 14-midweek rugby action in store this Wednesday for fans of the oval ball game with Lyon and Montpellier playing a catch-up fixture.

The two sides have endured completely different fortunes since the start of the season with Lyon lying sixth on the ladder having won six and drawn one of their 11 fixtures. Montpellier, on the other hand, are currently residing in 13th place on the standings and have only managed to register three wins from their ten fixtures.

Lyon v Montpellier
Wednesday 6 January
Stade Gerland

To Win (80 Mins)
Lyon 1/8
Draw 25/1
Montpellier 47/10

Les Wolves will be eager for this game as they were desperately unlucky at the weekend going down 14-15 to Castres at the Stade Gerland. While the game could have gone either way, it would have been one Lyon would have expected to have won considering Castres haven't set the world alight this term.

Prior to last weekend's defeat, Lyon also suffered a defeat going down 12-8 to CA Brive. They had won six and drawn one of their last seven fixtures prior to that Brive defeat. They will be desperate to return to winning ways here and this fixture gives them a great chance to do just that as Montpellier have been woeful this term.

In terms of team news, Lyon will be without former France stalwart Mathieu Bastareaud, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

Jockeys Ride Horses

Montpellier's dreadful run of form continued this past weekend as they lost their seventh game of the campaign going down 9-16 to Toulouse on home soil. The defeat has seen this weekend's visitors slip to 13th on the log, and they could well be in for a relegation dogfight unless they turn things around at a rapid rate.

Montpellier certainly don't have history on their side this Wednesday as they have lost four of the last six games played between the sides, with one of Lyon's victories coming in the 2018/19 Top 14 play-offs. Montpellier did, however, win the last clash between the sides as they ran out 33-8 victors during the ultimately abandoned 2019/20 campaign.

Verdict: Lyon 1/8
While there's not much value here, the Lyon win is an absolute banker. Should a handicap below 15 points be set, I'll also be having a punt on Lyon clearing that.
