Top 14: Bayonne v Agen Preview

With the 6 Nations back on this weekend, the Top 14 takes something of a hiatus with the only fixture being the catch-up clash between minnows Bayonne and Agen.

The visitors are all but mathematically relegated as they have only managed to secure two ladder points from their 18 games, while Bayonne are in a relegation dogfight and desperately need the win here to leapfrog Pau into 12th place.

Bayonne v Agen
Saturday 13 March
Stade Jean Dauger

To Win Match
Bayonne 1/20
Draw 40/1
Agen 9/1

The hosts have actually been in decent enough touch in recent weeks winning two of their last four fixtures. While this is hardly title-challenging form, if they can win half of their remaining eight games then they'll likely avoid the drop to the PRO D2.

They have delivered some solid displays over the past fortnight as well, causing a major upset with their 14-16 away win over Toulon and then running a strong Lyon side close in the last round going down 20-28.

Bayonne have fared well against Agen in recent times winning four of the last five encounters between the sides. Their most recent victory came last October where they ran out 15-26 victors.

Agen's long old season continued last weekend as they suffered their 18th defeat of the campaign going down 40-21 to Stade Francais. It was yet another game in which they conceded a boatload of points and it took their points difference tally to a staggering -457.

Despite not winning a game this term, Agen may actually come into this one slightly confident as their last trip to the Stade Dauger was a happy one as they beat Bayonne 22-23. It must be remembered, however, that they did suffer a 37-16 defeat at the same venue during their prior visit.

Verdict: Bayonne Minus
They have been in really good form over the past few weeks and I can fully see Bayonne racking up a crucial bonus-point victory over their struggling opponents.
