City open door to title rivals

There were plenty of pundits out there who were envisioning a 4 or 5-nil win for City at home to Chelsea this weekend. I personally felt that things were always going to be tighter against the schizophrenic London outfit. And that’s not just because of Chelsea’s recent uptick in form. There is just something about the athleticism of this Chelsea outfit that is perfectly calibrated to this City side.

Chelsea just sat on the back foot and absorbed the pressure at the Etihad, launching devastating counterattacks against City’s vulnerable high line. That led to Sterling’s opener and probably should have given them some breathing room going into the 2nd half. City’s stranglehold on possession became almost parodic in the 2nd half and it was only a matter of time until they equalized, with Rodri rifling home a fizzing left-foot half-volley in the closing stages of the match.

But City couldn’t really mobilize for a final tilt and I think a draw was ultimately a fair reflection of the match. I really think that Foden is wasted in a wider position while Doku tends to take too long in his decision-making process. The T-1000 also malfunctioned this weekend, with Erling Haaland wasting a series of gilt-edged opportunities to bring City back into the game. The truth is this: when Haaland isn’t scoring he isn’t providing a whole lot to the overall fabric of the side.

And City’s dropped points were obviously exacerbated by comfortable away wins for both Liverpool and Arsenal. Liverpool were clinical at Brentford, with four different goal-scorers wreaking havoc in a 4-1 win. Darwin Nunez scored an uncharacteristically composed little chip while Mo Salah scored in his return to action.

But Liverpool’s dynamic display was somewhat overshadowed by growing injury concerns. Curtis Jones and Diego Jota look like they will be out for a while. Darwin Nunez also felt a twinge that saw him leave the field of early. Jurgen Klopp has been exceptional with his squad rotation this season and it will be fascinating to see how he approaches it as we enter the business end. The big winners for me this weekend were Arsenal. They routed Burnley 5-0 to secure their 5th consecutive Premier League win.

Their top players seem to be cooking again and there appears to be a real belief that they could hold off their more favoured title challengers. Martin Odegaard has often been accused of hiding in the big moments but he has been exceptional in recent weeks. Arteta’s next real challenge is learning to dual-wield a tile race and the latter stages of the Champions League. Pep and Klopp know what it takes to manage both domestic and European responsibilities and this will make or break Arsenal’s campaign.

Leverkusen pull eight points clear of a desperate Bayern

Maybe Jurgen Klopp won’t be taking that sabbatical after all. Bayer Leverkusen stretched their Bundesliga advantage to eight points after another shocking weekend for Die Roten. Leverkusen were far from their fluid best as they travelled to FC Heidenheim.

They were neutralized as an attacking threat until Jeremie Frimpong pounced on a brilliant cutback to open the scoring. That was the wing-back’s 7th goal this season and it once again highlighted the importance of width to this Leverkusen outfit. Amine Adil- stepping in for the injured Victor Boniface- scored the 2nd to give Xabi Alonso’s side some breathing space.

Heidenheim scored a late goal but the would-be Bundesliga champions held on for all three points. And Thomas Tuchel’s side were once again an embarrassment, losing their 3rd consecutive match at mid-table Bochum. Tuchel’s decision to start Choupo-Moting ahead of Leroy Sane is tantamount to managerial suicide. Bayern were sluggish throughout and I really can’t see any way back for the Bavarian giants this season.

Harry Kane and Thomas Muller want to occupy exactly the same space and everyone- except the manager- can see that. Tuchel only won last year’s Bundesliga after Dortmund fluffed their final-day lines and his tenure as manager could go down as the worst in Bayern’s modern history.

Inter cruising to Serie A title

It looks like the Scudetto will once again be a procession this year, with Inter Milan romping home to victory in similar fashion to Napoli last season. They demolished Salernitana in a decidedly one-sided 4-0 home victory.

Inzaghi’s side showed little remorse for the basement boys, with Marcus Thuram giving the Nerazzuri a 17th-minute lead. Captain fantastic Martinez would also get his name on the scoresheet in a really emphatic win. Calhanoglu knitted everything together in the heart of midfield and you really can’t see this Inter side surrendering this advantage.

Juventus looked flat against relegation-threatened Hellas Verona, twice having to come from a goal down to share the spoils. Max Allegri’s Juventus are now four games without a victory and sit nine points adrift of table-topping Inter. They just look like a stereotypically dogged Italian outfit trying desperately to keep up with a side leagues beyond them.

Real stutter while Barca create some momentum

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad, take your injury and make it better. Sorry, I couldn’t resist that little dip into Beatlemania. But honestly, Los Blancos lose so much of their midfield thrust without the services of the talismanic Englishman. They were unable to get out of first gear against Rayo Vallecano this weekend and ultimately had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Vini Jr was surprisingly quiet all evening while Joselu- despite scoring a goal- was starved of service throughout.

It wasn’t a disastrous result given Real’s pretty cushy La Liga position. But it does mean that Girona can draw within three points of them with victory over Athletic Club on Monday. Could Barcelona draw themselves back into an unlikely title race? Their 2-1 victory at Celta Vigo- propelled by a brace by top marksman Robert Lewandowski- means they now sit eight points adrift of league leaders Real.

Xavi’s men are unbeaten since he announced he is leaving Barca at the end of the season and it seems as if that has alleviated some of the pressure on his (and the team’s) shoulders.

Player of the Week- Martin Odegaard

I had to go for Martin Odegaard this week, as much for his performance on Saturday as for his performance over the past four weeks. The Arsenal captain has looked rejuvenated in that attacking midfield role, orchestrating all of Arsenal’s attacking output with glorious precision.

He scored the opener this week before playing an instrumental role in the awarding of the penalty. He then provided a lovely assist for the 3rd in what was a mesmerizing display from the Norwegian.
