DStv Premiership: ‘Zitha has done the job the right-back has to do’ – Chiefs coach explains playing Kwinika out of position

Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has explained the reason behind the decision to play Zitha Kwinika at right-back ahead of natural fullbacks Dillan Solomons and Reeve Frosler.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has explained his reason behind the decision to play Zitha Kwinika at right-back ahead of conventional full-backs Dillan Solomons and Reeve Frosler.

Kwinika has played at centre-back for most of his career, but the defender has been mostly utilised as a right-back by Johnson.

That was again the case in the 1-0 victory over struggling Golden Arrows during a DStv Premiership game at FNB Stadium in Egoli on Tuesday.

Teenager Wandile Duba scored a stunning goal to help Amakhosi return to winning ways and register their first victory of the year.

On the night, natural fullback Solomons played off the bench while Frosler didn’t make the matchday squad to tackle Abafana Bes’thende.

“There’s nothing wrong with Reeve and there’s nothing wrong with Dillan, but Zitha has always given me the backup even though he is a centre-back,” Johnson told media after the game in Soweto.

“He gives me a backup as a centre-back as well. Sometimes you have to play with God, play him (Zitha) at right back and if he doesn’t do a bad job, you can bring him back again.

“I think Reeve had a slight knock, not something to take him off for, but we put caution to the wind as far as that position.

“In the last two games, Zitha did very well. We haven’t had any major crosses from the right (side).

“We haven’t had any player that has been able to skin Zitha, so he has done the job that the right-back has to do. So, we will see, maybe in the future he will go back to his position as centre-back.”

After getting back to winning ways against Arrows, Johnson will be hoping to build momentum when Amakhosi battle it out against bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in a league match at FNB Stadium on Saturday where kick-off is at 3.30 pm.
