Bafana Bafana played without Themba Zwane and Ronwen Williams, but started Evidence Makgopa, Thapelo Maseko, Mihlali Mayambela and Percy Tau.

“It was not bad, but it was not good either. Like I said before the game, this is a preparation game. We worked hard in the last three to four days. We needed a little bit more freshness to beat Lesotho. I am not unhappy, certainly not. Everyone had the opportunity to play,” said South Africa coach Huge Broos after the draw with Lesotho.

Bafana Bafana’s AFCON campaign will start against Mali in Ivory Coast on Tuesday. Namibia and Tunisia are in the same pool.

“This will not have an influence on how we play at AFCON, that is for sure. But we would have liked to have won that game. But you have to understand the circumstances that influenced this match,” added Broos.

“Like I said before the game, this isn’t even a friendly match for me, it’s a preparation game. What we needed to see and not see, that’s what happened in this game.”

Team doctor Tshepo Molobi has confirmed defender Mothobi Mvala will travel with Bafana Bafana to Ivory Coast for AFCON. He had been sidelined by a groin injury, but has recovered enough to join the squad. Whether he plays at the tournament remains in the balance.

“We did investigations which came back satisfactory,” said Molobi.

“We are quite hopeful and optimistic that we will get Mothobi ready to participate for our first game on Tuesday.

“He has gone to do laser treatment for the injury that he sustained. And, bare in mind that this was more precautionary than anything. We will continue treating him and come Friday, or Saturday, we will make a decision after our final fitness test.”

Senegal are the reigning AFCON champions. South Africa have won the tournament once – in 1996.
