A brilliant 148 not out from Jordan Hermann and 4/23 from Andile Mogokane subjected the Hollywoodbets Dolphins to a 126 run One Day Cup defeat against the Dafabet Warriors at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Sunday. The visiting side from Gqeberha were able to dictate the match for the most part having notched up a score of well over 300.

Jon-Jon Smuts and Romashan Pillay’s partnership threatened to keep the Dolphins in the game, however wickets and scoreboard pressure meant the Dolphins couldn’t get enough momentum in their batting innings. After winning the toss and batting first, the Warriors openers gave their side a solid platform and were patient from the start.

In some tricky batting conditions early on Hermann and Rosier went past 50 for the first wicket in the 12th over of the innings. At the first drinks break after 16 overs the Warriors had moved on to 69 without loss.

Rosier was 27 not out and Hermann unbeaten on 31 as the visitors started to compile a strong start to their innings. The Dolphins did pick up their first wicket when Rosier holed out to Jon-Jon Smuts at deep square leg off the bowling of Andile Simelane for 32. The wicket came at just the right time for the Dolphins who had the Warriors 77 for one in the nineteenth over.

The Warriors brought up their 100 in the 23rd over with just one wicket down. At the halfway stage of the innings the visiting team had advanced to 114 for one before Hermann went to his half century in the 27th over off 76 balls as he and Matthew Breetzke put together another half century partnership.

At the 30 over mark the Warriors were 146 for one with Hermann on 55 and Breetzke on 46. Off the final ball of the 36th over the Dolphins had their second wicket. Breetzke picked out Subrayen at short fine leg who took a good catch to dismiss the right-hander for 62 off 59 balls with three fours and three sixes.

At the loss of the second wicket the Warriors were on 193. Hermann brought up his hundred off 115 balls in the 41st over of the innings as the Warriors put their foot on the gas.

When he went to his ton the Warriors were 243 for two with Swanepoel at the crease with Hermann. The Warriors added 100 runs in that period without losing a wicket as they finished on 343 for two from their 50 overs. Hermann finished on 148 not out off 145 balls with 14 fours and four sixes while Swanepoel ended on 73 not out off 43 balls with six fours and five sixes.

Andile Simelane was unfortunate to not pick up more wickets with a number of dropped catches off his bowling, but he finished with one for 52 off his ten overs which was the pick of the bowling figures. In the chase the Dolphins lost the wicket of SJ Erwee with the score on 37. The left-hander made 11 off 33 balls before he was caught at mid-off in the ninth over.

Smuts went to a fluent fifty in the seventeenth over of the chase off just 36 balls with five fours and three sixes. Romashan Pillay was with him in the middle as the pair put on 50 off 54 balls. The Dolphins lost their second wicket when Smuts was rushed by a Swanepoel delivery and chipped it back to the bowler for 58 from 46 balls. The Dolphins were just shy of 100 when Smuts was dismissed.

The Dolphins then lost Pillay who was starting to get himself set. He skied a Jason Raubenheimer delivery to Matthew Breetzke at cover for 32 off 43 balls. On the same score the Dolphins lost their fourth when Parsons was brilliantly caught behind by Jean du Plessis for eight off the bowling of Andile Mogakane. At that stage the Dolphins were 112 for four, needing 232 runs from 167 balls.

As Khaya Zondo and Tshepang Dithole were starting to establish their partnership they lost Zondo for eleven and then two balls later Eathan Bosch was caught off the bowling of Mogokane for a duck. The Dolphins were from 135 for four to 135 for six in the 27th over.

Andile Mogokane picked up his fourth wicket when Dithole was caught for 16 and the Dolphins were 144 for seven. The eighth wicket partnership between Prenelan Subrayen and Simelane was a productive one for the Dolphins. They put together 42 before Subrayen fell for 25.

After injuring his hamstring in the field, Dolphins captain Marques Ackerman came into bat at number ten and him and Simelane put together a valiant partnership of 31 before Simelane fell chasing runs. He made 28 off 32 balls before Okuhle Cele was dismissed first ball to see the Dolphins bowled out for 217 and hand the Warriors a 126 run victory.

Ackerman was left not out on 22 off 24 balls. The Hollywoodbets Dolphins are on the road next week when they face Goldrush Boland at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday.
